Scape goated. F' Shanahan. You can't bring a guy in, micro manage his balls off, then blame him for issues in schemes you made him run.

I’m no longer a 49’rs fan. Waived Sherm and now this bs. Their offense choked plain and simple.

I don't keep up with pro football but my understanding is the following:

-Wilks was there only one year
-In that year his defense helped the 49er's win the NFC and go to the Super Bowl

Doesn't seem like reasonable grounds for firing to me (not that there has to be one). Did David Tepper purchase the 49er's and we don't know about it?

I am sorry to see him terminated. Although I am not a 49ers fan or a fan of their coach, it's the NFL and a business. Wilks understands the life. The system run was not what Wilks ran in the past....per the article...it is what it is ...
My larger issue was the Panthers and the handling of Wilks. They were terrible and are terrible, however, he did a decent job on a terrible team... enough..IMO...to get HC job.

Seems idiotic to me. You make it to the Super Bowl and end up losing in OT to the hottest young QB since Tom Brady...I would keep my coaching staff intact. Also, there were plenty of mistakes to go around. The 49er offense wasn't overly impressive and two huge special teams gaffes is really what cost them the game.
Shanahan's an idiot. I hope another team gives Wilks another shot as a head coach. Wilks has always impressed me and he represents App tremendously well. I regret I've never met him...hope to at some point.

That was the bigger crime! He should've gotten the job, but he's probably lucky that he didn't. Tepper's an effing mess.

You also can’t give the ball to Patrick Mahomes for the final drive to win the game. When the 49s took the ball to start overtime they had to get 7. Really poor decision to take the ball first.

Shanahan is still employed. So I guess mission accomplished for him.

100% scapegoated. The reasons I've read that were given for his firing were "he didn't run the same scheme as we've had in years past" and "the defense regressed this year." The defense regressed argument doesn't hold water for me. The 49ers had the 5th best defense over all this year. They were #1 last year, but were #9 the year before. Ok, you dropped from #1, but still being top 10 and being good enough to make the Super Bowl doesn't really seem like a regression.

Is Wilks a jerk or hard to work with or something? Because I can't figure out why he keeps getting fired from jobs where he does a good job.

Also, at the risk of being accused of being "woke" or seeing something that isn't there, it sure is interesting to look at the faces of the head coach, offensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator, and compare those to the defensive coordinator. Juuuuuust sayiiiiin....

Using the same “logic” could you explain why he got hired?

The 49er defense, in at least two games, was called out for not playing hard. I saw some of it that the know-it-all yakkers on the sports talk shows were showing and discussing some time back. This must not have boded well for Steve.

Yeah I’m sure that his 30+ years of experience and decade as an NFL coordinator with one Super Bowl team meant nothing, they were looking for a diversity hire!

Sound, sound logic.

Not what I was saying at all. It was insinuated that he was fired due to his race. I was just saying if you’re a racist group why would you hire him to start with?

I didn't say it was logical or true. But in a league that has been criticized for a major lack of diversity in the upper ranks of coaching, managing, and ownership, it's not a good look when you fire a black coach after a pretty darn successful season and don't seem to have a really good reason.

So you made a completely unfounded insinuation that people you don’t know from Adams house cat are racist. My question was, if they are racist, as you suggested, why did they hire him in the first place? Wouldn’t it have been easier just to have never hired him?

Give the ball to McCaffery win the game and everyone keeps their jobs.
