UNC-Charlotte Spring Game Draws 14,000
Re: UNC-Charlotte Spring Game Draws 14,000
So, does this mean that they'll field a marching band too?

Yeah - none of us are happy about that. Fact is if the alumni had not organized and put pressure on them we still wouldn't have football. This program truly belongs to the people. What really sucks is if Judy had moved on football when USF did we would be in a far better place today than we are now trying to play catch up.Rekdiver wrote:all smack aside, all the arguments made for a uncc asu ecu rivalry are there and the dents It will put in the ACC viewing public are potentially significant. The only obstacle is Judy Rose, who for many years wanted to keep football away from her campus.
ECU, App and Charlotte need to come to the realization that it would be best for the three of us to chip away at the Big 4 together rather than each on our own.
As for the band - there are conflicting reports. The official word is no marching band at the start but will have some local HS bands in. Recent news is though that they are scrambling to try to have a band. Not sure where this will land. I was ok with just having a larger pep band that didn't march. We shall see how it plays out. As much as we want to have everything in place on Day 1, some things just take time and money.

Hey NWA, why the hell did you name your athletics facility after Judy (Medusa) Rose? It always seemed to me that your conference realignment prosperity was accomplished in spite of her, and she didn't seem like a major cheer leader for getting football until she would have been hung for treason otherwise.
App fans don't like her because of her arrogant and unprofessional comments about ASU coupled with her flat out cowardice regarding scheduling us in any sport, but it also seems like a lot of UNCC fans aren't fond of her either. What has she done right to get a brand new structure in the football stadium named after her?

I agree with you and rek on the need for the three to work together to combat the ACC mentality alive in NC.NWA49 wrote:

As to the second point I find it hard to believe that UNCC is not actively pursuing a marching band, if not for the football tem then for their music education program. Going through 4 years and getting a music education degree without any marching band experience would seem to put those students at a distinct disadvantage to students that have that experience.
Heck UT Arlington has a marching band but NOT a football team! They kept the band when football went away by justifying the need for marching band as a vital part of their music education program.

Been a while since I've been by to visit, so congrats on the FBS invite. Having family ties to ASU, I'm looking forward to a potential matchup between our teams in the future!
The Judy Rose Football Center name was the decision of the primary benefactor.

When someone gives you enough money for long enough, you let them name it whatever they want.
Make no mistake though, our fans definitely aren't united in support for Judy. She dragged her feet way to long on football, and has other short comings, but I have to give credit to the athletic department as a whole for the job that they have done once they started on the path to football. No corners have been cut, and it showed on Saturday.
Best of luck on the season!

Re: UNC-Charlotte Spring Game Draws 14,000
HighFlying beat me to it. Trust me when it was announced I about had a heart attack. She has done some things very well and other things extremely poorly. Our AD is very much run like a family company rather than a business and given the amount of alumni we have our athletic foundation should be much larger. With all of that said they have knocked things out of the park with football. Between the stadium, the coach, the CUSA invite and everything else. I mainly fault her for having lack of vision. I would have much rather the facility be named for Mac Everertt who really was the driving force for football once the pressure was on.Gonzo wrote:Hey NWA, why the hell did you name your athletics facility after Judy (Medusa) Rose? Re: UNC-Charlotte Spring Game Draws 14,000
Excerpt from 247's interview with Jaquil Capel. (I have permission to post this)
He decided to confirm what I've said about the culture of UNCC and the level of play of their football team/kick UNCC in the balls before he left.
Jaquil Capel spent his first year of college playing at UNC-Charlotte's start-up football program. He originally committed to App State out of high school, but changed his mind and went with the 49ers. Yesterday he decided he belonged in Boone after all and is transferring to the Mountaineers.
WR Jaquil Capel (UNCC to App State Transfer)
"I didn't really like it [UNC-Charlotte], I kind of wanted more out of the whole college thing, on the field and off. I knew if I wanted to transfer I knew I possibly wanted to go to App. Plus App went to the Sun Belt and things went pretty well for me here and so I decided to transfer." said Capel.
On whether the lack of being able to play an actual game had an effect on him he said, "Oh yeah and I wanted a little bit more competition...Also, I wanted to leave so I can play for championships."

I had forgotten the influence of Dale Halton....Duh! She loves Judy and other than Ike Belk has been a major if not the major donor in the athletic program. This explains why Judy is still there. I find it ironic that the one building named after Judy is in a sport she wanted nothing to do with. I think we all know what influence a major donor has on a program!!!!!

Like we have said numerous times - everyone is looking for a different experience. I have talked to plenty of people who left App, left Charlotte, left Chapel Hill and plenty of other schools because it didn't fit them. I don't fault the kid for looking for what he wants. As for competition - we don't even have a full roster and he was one of the best kids we signed so yeah, not much competition. Shocker.
And honest question here - when will you guys be able to play for a championship? Are you allowed in FCS playoffs this year? When you all be bowl eligible? I haven't kept up with your timeline. So basically he is saying being able to compete for a sunbelt title in his jr or sr year is what he wanted? Just confused since championship as far as App or Charlotte or any of the none BCS schools isn't really possible. His shot at a championship would have been going to App off the bat to play for an FCS one.

IMO Dale has kept Judy employed. Her money has paid for basketball, tennis and now football. Judy has done a great job of keeping her giving, but it has covered her ass in not building a larger foundation.Rekdiver wrote:I had forgotten the influence of Dale Halton....Duh! Got ya - just read up on it so you can qualify for SBC title in 2014 and then a bowl in 2015. Cool.Gonzo wrote:We're eligible for the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Thats one year before us. Another honest question, because I'm confused about NCAA transfer rules with both of us transitioning from FCS to FBS... does Capel have to sit out a year for his transfer? Or does he get to play since he was a redshirt here?NWA49 wrote:Got ya - just read up on it so you can qualify for SBC title in 2014 and then a bowl in 2015. Also, one of the interesting things that I noticed was how many fans paid to come to our scrimmage and wore gear from other schools. For example, I saw several App and UNC hats. I take that as a sign of encouragement that we are engaging the city with this football addition and drawing fans who otherwise would not have stepped foot on our campus. For instance, I noticed a gentleman wearing an App hat two rows behind me in the FSL section. Knowing that he paid at least $1250 just for the right to buy his season ticket to sit there, where will his allegiance fall on the inevitable Saturday when App and Charlotte both have home games? I'm hoping he purchased his first Charlotte hat on his way out of the stadium!

As for other schools represented at the Spring game, it wouldnt surprise me one bit if a handful of people there were fans of other schools just checking it out. So many of our fans have contacts on both sides, finding a seat without paying the seat license probably isnt a problem.

Maybe he has a kid there. Not sure, but it's not uncommon. There's a couple with season seats beside us at KBS. They didn't go to App, but their daughter did (she has since graduated). They used the games as reasons to drive up the mountain to visit their daughter.HighFlying49er wrote:Thats one year before us. Maybe some of those 49er fans that frequently take shots at App for being "UNC fans" will finally see the hypocrisy in such a statement...
No mid-major school in North Carolina is immune to it. Hell, I know a guy that went to State that still wore Carolina gear.

I had an executive at work who bought season tickets as a "gift for clients" (his words) offer me the tickets because he knows I am a college football fan. Not saying this is how they all happened, but at least one did.HighFlying49er wrote:Thats one year before us. I respectfully declined the tickets and he replied with "I can't find anyone that wants these things! I've asked all the Charlotte grads I know so I am resorting to football fans now!" (again, his words)
