I agree that nothing I saw scared me. But they did look more competent that I recall seeing in years past.

Re: Unc Charlotte
I attended the game as well tonight.
Charlotte did what they had to do and the outcome really wasn't in doubt. Gardner-Webb played sloppy football and were really outmanned throughout the game. But, Charlotte also didn't scare me at all heading into next week.
Lemay and their back-up running back was solid. Reynolds looked good, but GW did not sub out Defensive Lineman at all and they really didn't mount any kind of pass rush against Charlotte.
The Niners actually played good defensive football in most of their conference games last year. Their offense was simply ineffective after Reynolds was injured last year. Hence, it was surprising that GW scored a couple of TD's on their starters, plus had the kickoff return.
For us non-season ticket holders, Charlotte really didn't do a great job of putting parking information out and accessing the campus one hour before kickoff was tough. (We actually parked at the light rail garage and walked across to campus)
We bought walk up tickets for $10 each
They had a pretty good crowd (16K announced). There were no noticeable blocks of empty seats and the students stayed through the third quarter.
Their ushers went on a little power trip in the third quarter and decided that the standing area in an unoccupied handicap ledge above the seats that we, and others, had been standing at all game were suddenly off limits, and that we needed to stand 6 feet back behind a white line, even though that section and the others around it were not being used for their intended purposes. Not exactly the hospitality that is going to lead to building a fan base.
They had 4 points of sale for beer. Lines at kickoff through halftime were 15 minutes and they had two Cabarrus Brewery choices that I saw, both draft. They checked ID's, gave you a wrist band and checked ID's a second time. They didn't track what they had tapped that well, and our Charlotte fan counterparts paid for fewer beers than were poured a couple of times. (Free beer might make Charlotte football better???)
All in all, it was a comfortable night to knock the rust off and watch some football, albeit sloppy.

Re: Unc Charlotte
I caught some of the second half. UNCC did a lot of their scoring at the end of the game when GW players were cramping up after each play, which is the typical tipping point for FCS teams with fewer scholarships/depth.
Their offense uses a clap to signal the center to snap the ball. They’re going to have a very hard time next week unless they change to a non-auditory cue at The Rock. GW players were clapping to draw false starts. We’ll probably see their O line holding hands to overcome the KBS noise level.
Next week is going to be a very fun blood bath to watch if you’re an App fan.

Re: Unc Charlotte
The amount of fans they think they can bring up the mountain will have no bearing on the game. Benny is a really good running back and Reynolds can scramble; but our D's speed is ELITE. Tomorrow needs to be a warning shot across Charlottes bow for next week.
So dear 49er fans who READ this; please come enjoy the beautiful scenery, our wonderful campus and our hospitality off the field. I know this is a huge game on your schedule and it is for our fans too!

We scored 35 in the first half and 14 in the second. How is that doing a lot of our scoring at the end of the game?Gonzo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 7:19 amI caught some of the second half. UNCC will be a nice test for us next week. Hard to get a read on what will happen in game 2 from what you see in game 1.

Re: Unc Charlotte
So you deny that the game was stopped after several plays when GW players were down with cramps on both of those drives? I think 14 points is a lot, but then again I’m a football guy. You must have been one of the 4/5 of attendees who left at half time.Niner National wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 7:52 amWe scored 35 in the first half and 14 in the second. We should win easily next weekend, but after watching parts of the UNCC, FIU, and UAB games yesterday, I expect the Niners to get to bowl eligiblity in their dumpster fire of a conference.

Re: Unc Charlotte
ETSU is a much better tune-up for us for Charlotte than GW helps them get ready for us. Next week they are going to experience football at warp speed in a hostile environment. Nothing last night showed me that they are ready. Foot to throat and hold it.

He was probably in the beer line during the first half. That's why he didn't know you scored 35 in the first half.

As long as Reynolds stays healthy then I would agree with you. They were a much better offense with Reynolds at QB than Kean.AppfaninCAALand wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 8:13 amWe should win easily next weekend, but after watching parts of the UNCC, FIU, and UAB games yesterday, I expect the Niners to get to bowl eligiblity in their dumpster fire of a conference.

Re: Unc Charlotte
28% of their scoring is not "a lot." All the jabbering and put downs are what stoke a rivalry but mean nothing as to the outcome of a game. I believe the game next week will be closer than many of our fans want to believe. It sure seems a number of us are trying to convince ourselves otherwise.Gonzo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 8:10 amSo you deny that the game was stopped after several plays when GW players were down with cramps on both of those drives? Well let's hope for his sake then he runs for the boundaries and not for more yards against us. We all know the kind of collisions our D can and Will Make.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 8:33 amAs long as Reynolds stays healthy then I would agree with you. What do you mean? Charlotte already played in their big rivalry game yesterday! They even reclaimed the lead in the series with that win!

Re: Unc Charlotte
I agree. Kean does throw a better deep ball than Reynolds. However, Reynolds is crafty and his ability to scramble adds an element. The play where he was tackled just short of the goal line last night was a broken play. He started scrambling left. Then, broke it back to the right on his own and almost beat the defense to the pylon. However, GW was getting zero pass rush.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 8:33 amAs long as Reynolds stays healthy then I would agree with you. Likely, he'll be running for his life against us, as was the case last year.
