Believe it or not, no. UNCC will basically take a player with the bare minimum for NCAA requirements and right now would even take a guy just below it, if good enough, with hopes he can go to summer school and qualify. They are trying to make a big push and are willing to take these chances to catch up to us, C-USA, etc. Hard to believe but Charlotte will indeed take players the SEC won't even take from academic standpoint. I don't even think Coastal Carolina would have taken this kid.

I don’t like this thread. It makes us look petty at best. At worst...eh.

Maybe they can call up Chapel Hill and ask about their "tutoring" program.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 9:45 pmBelieve it or not, no. I don't think Mack is going to use it now so maybe Charlotte is already using that and they thought what you just said. We aren't the ones taking a risk on a questionable student-athlete in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Re: 4 Star Commits to Charlotte
Charlotte is taking a risk, but as long as they are using legit tools to get the kid eligible, I don't really have a problem with it. There are plenty of programs out there doing this all the time. On a personal level, I hope he is able to take advantage of the opportunity given him and get it done. I'm a believer in second chances (redemption). If he can't get it done, they've wasted a scholarship in this recruiting class.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the jabs and jokes, especially at the expense of UNC, but I get no pleasure out of seeing an athlete fail.

Thank you. Well said. And sometimes the gamble pays off. It did for UCF with Daunte Culpeper.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 7:42 amCharlotte is taking a risk, but as long as they are using legit tools to get the kid eligible, I don't really have a problem with it. This was before the star rankings started but Culpeper would've been a 4 or 5 star. He was being pursued by the big name programs but they all backed off when it looked like his test scores would keep him from qualifying. Since he was local to the central Florida area, UCF offered to tutor him and help improve his scores. He did and he qualified and then the big programs came calling again. But as a show of loyalty, he stuck with UCF who helped him qualify. He helped bring media attention as we transitioned to FBS and would become our first 1st round pick.

Re: 4 Star Commits to Charlotte
That's fair enough, but to me its more about what you want your program to be. When I was younger, a colleague on the verge of retiring gave me some advice: "who do you want to be? If you take shortcuts, you'll get a reputation, you need to decide who you want to be." We are in a small, tight knit industry, plenty of people have taken shortcuts, made and lost fortunes, and garnered a well earned negative reputation that follows them.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 7:42 amCharlotte is taking a risk, but as long as they are using legit tools to get the kid eligible, I don't really have a problem with it. If there is an athlete that cannot qualify at ANY SEC school, where they will do just about anything to get someone in to help them win, then its fair to say that I don't think App should bend the rules to try and make it happen. I don't think that athlete is ready for even the least rigorous academic study in college (UNC programs notwithstanding), and should go Juco.
The real indictment here is that there is no path to the NFL that doesn't go through college football.

Re: 4 Star Commits to Charlotte
Those are fair statements. I am certainly glad that App does not (generally) take non-qualifiers although there was a time when we did occasionally take them. We are fortunate to be at a different stage of development than Charlotte. I wouldn't propose we start taking academic risks, but I also don't see the need in bashing those that take a different path. As I said....as long as they use legit methods to get him eligible, I don't see a problem.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 8:27 amThat's fair enough, but to me its more about what you want your program to be. I absolutely agree with your last statement. College football shouldn't be a de facto minor league. Unfortunately, that's what it has become.

Oh good god, bunch of nervous nancy's. it's unc charlotte and the off season. Lighten up and have some fun at their expense. I'm sure the kid knows he bombed out in high school. Probably had a great time doing it.
