Dook is an interesting choice
Transfer quarterback Darian Mensah, the top-rated player in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings, has committed to Duke

Decent team and exceptional education. Pretty good choice. Maybe he's playing the long game.

How long will it be before our uniforms have sponsor ads on them? College football has been a business for a long time but this, this no longer resembles college football.
College athletes give up a lot regardless of the sport. They should be compensated, but most already are. It came in the form of scholarships that included room and board and in the old days a laundry money stipend and or meal vouchers at outside restaurants. In a lot of ways the NCAA's archaic rules structure brought a lot of this out.
I would be all for giving scholarship athletes a monthly allowance of up to a couple thousand dollars mostly to allow for incidental or car expenses, allowing schools or boosters to pay transportation to and from home, a fixed number of tickets to each game, insurance against debilitating injury.
But what we have now is obscene. It will eventually settle into something manageable but at what level? And will the general student population and tuition costs face an even bigger burden than they already do? At what cost?? College already costs too much and is not the value proposition it was.
This is not college football, it is pay for play and that is professional no matter how you cut it. Course it could be I'm just old and clinging to tradition.....

The logos on their uniforms are already advertising. That is why you see on every college uniform on of the following: Russell, Nike, Addidas, and Under Armour, let me know if I have missed one.Apptiger wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:55 amHow long will it be before our uniforms have sponsor ads on them? 14 in the TP currently.
Looking at our two-deep we've lost:
Offense
8 starters (5 seniors)
0 second stringers
Defense
6 starters (2 seniors) and one DL that was injured now in TP
4 second string (2 seniors)
10 of the 14 guys in the TP were contributors last year and probably starters next year, that context matters.

I don't see how any of this pay to play is sustainable...1.5 mil to a freshman is outrageous...At some point I would think that the fan bases would be tired of paying for this.
And for the business attaching their name to kids how much revenue return is actually happening...
I feel CFB is in an expanded bubble and we're all just waiting for it to pop.

Agreed, this thing is perfectly designed to self-destruct. Will be interesting to see what happens with NIL/college sports if the economy takes a turn downward.kornegaylw wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 5:15 pmI don't see how any of this pay to play is sustainable...1.5 mil to a freshman is outrageous...At some point I would think that the fan bases would be tired of paying for this.

I'm about done with "college" football. I'll still watch here and there, but my passion for the game is gone.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 2:13 pmI have said it before and I will say it again....if a league pops up with no NIL, I hope we join it immediately. Even if it is Idaho, UNCC and Georgia State. This is not college football. This is semi-pro. I have no use for it.
That said, this model is not sustainable and will eventually implode. I truly believe a significant portion of the fan base will bail in the next few years. Maybe from the rubble something resembling collegiate football will emerge.

All the more reason to give more funds to the Baseball program. 3-5 teams make the postseason from the SBC every year…and it’s only getting stronger. Those are by far the best odds of the power 3 sports to make postseason.

Re: SunBelt and other interesting 25 portal happenings
Yep!
It’s nuts that right now we have unlimited transfers, no salary cap, no contracts that make a player stay at any school for more than a year, etc.
There should at the least be a salary cap for D1 teams, a limit on transfers, maybe force every player to stay at their first team for two years.
The current state of college football is madness. All because apparently kids who got a free ride to play a sport were victims.
I remember when a kid with a scholarship was considered the lucky one.

Well, the Oregon State game next year just got a little more difficult.
Duke QB committed to Oregon State. He’s a pretty good player.
