Pay equity is a complicated calculation because many factors enter in the picture. Women take more time off to raise a family, choice of college major, and one's occupation all impact the difference in pay. However, the point of the AAUW study, based of U.S. Department of Education data, was to show that one year after graduation in many fields men make more than women. It is a more apples to apples comparison.

Marital status affects gross income (joint tax filing status etc). All of those factors are important in narrowing the scope and yielding reliable data that fairly compares two people in the exact same situation.
