Re: Peach Bowl
It was never a possibility that the SEC would be the P5 conference shut out of the first playoff. Alabama was in it regardless of what happen. ESPN was hoping that either Ole Miss or Miss St could have run the table so they could put two SEC teams in the playoff.goapps93 wrote:Buckeyes beat the Tide. Maybe Alabama didn't deserve to be in over TCU. Could it be that, dare I say, Alabama was over rated?

94, I entered this discussion because of several comments between 2 threads that Ohio State was not very good and not deserving of its selection. I disagreed but do recognize that 3 teams were worthy of the last spot.AppSt94 wrote:Exactly. The way that the whole thing transpired defies the "win and your in" mantra. I like how Saint put it. Reverse the situations for Ohio State and TCU. What kind of holy hell would have been unleashed on the football universe if that had happened to the Buckeyes? Or Florida State for that matter.
I think we agree that the process is flawed. We also agree primarily on the body of work. However, the body of work has to include the games of the last weekend of December 6th. We disagree whether there can be movement in the rankings in the last week. Ironically, no one has complained that TCU leaped Florida State for the 3rd spot in the second to last rankings. Unfairly, that ranking may have given TCU a false sense of security.
One of the playoff selection criteria is winning their conference championship. Ohio State won theirs while arguably, Baylor won the Big 12. These championships only occurred in that last week in early December. I know that the Big 12 commissioner copped out on the league champ but with proper leadership, a policy should have been in place at the beginning of the season. The general public considers Baylor as the Big 12 champ due to its head to head win. In addition, the wins by Baylor (over K-State) and Ohio State were much more accomplished than TCU beating Iowa St that weekend. In short, there were reasons for OSU and Baylor to receive additional consideration after the final week’s games.
The cop-out by the Big 12 commissioner would have worked though if Arizona, Missouri, Ga Tech and/ or Wisconsin could have won their championship games. In past years, many teams tended to play their way out of the National Championship game in the last weekend.
The good news is that the national controversy regarding the selection of 4 playoff teams should help increase the field to 8 teams soon. The process is flawed - for ratings, of course. Peace.
