Penn State Whistle Blower gets $12 M
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/penn- ... 57452.html
It was in August, 15 years after Mike McQueary walked in on Jerry Sandusky and a boy in a Penn State shower; an incident he failed to immediately end, but reported to his boss the next day.
It was five years after the scandal broke nationally, costing McQueary his once-promising football coaching career, Joe Paterno his job and iconic reputation and Sandusky, the former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator, his freedom.
McQueary was 42 years old in August, but back living in his parent’s house in State College, Pa. He was no longer the hero athlete who starred at the local high school, or the former starting quarterback at Penn State, or one of Paterno’s trusted assistants. Before the Sandusky storm, he and his wife bought a house in the same simple neighborhood of Paterno, an easy walk to campus. If he never left, he’d have been happy. Maybe, he dreamed, he might one day be the head coach.
Now he was half a decade out of work. His entire savings and retirement accounts drained. He and his wife (and young child) separated. Living with his parents was his only option.
Coaching jobs either never materialized or were pulled at the last second by cautious administrators. He wasn’t aiming high either, these were low-level jobs, part-time positions at small schools – a four-month deal at Savannah State, a shot with Elizabeth City of Division II.
He didn’t care. He’d take anything. It was the same for anything he tried: sales gigs, a job with a human resources company, an attempt at being a golf instructor. He even failed to land a sales clerk position at a local golf store. He tried everything. He got nothing. His name was toxic. The little money he’d made was doing yard work and odd jobs.

Thanks for sharing this NewApp. If ever there was a fall guy Mike McQueary is one. I am glad he won some money, but I am sure he would rather be earning it in his profession. I hope he is now able to cobble together a career in coaching, but the stink of that situation will be hard scrub off no matter what.

Part of me feels sorry for him. But then I think about the young child trapped in the shower with Sandusky. McQueary was the only person who could have helped that boy, and he chose to walk away.

Apparently the courts disagreed with you twice regarding whether he is a victim. No doubt you know better than the evidence and testimony presented. Perhaps you can help overturn these decisions based on your insight on this matter.Boone Goon wrote:Part of me feels sorry for him. Sorry, not sorry! Crimes against children don't earn someone a $12M settlement. Label it however you want, but the fact that anyone from that time gets money other than those children is shameful.CVAPP wrote:Apparently the courts disagreed with you twice regarding whether he is a victim. The guy has no spine. A hero or let's just say a normal human being would have stepped in and ended what was happening to that young boy. I am thankful that he finally put on his big boy pants the next day but there is no forgiveness for walking away from that young kid the day before. As far as the courts they don't always get it right either and actually they get it wrong a lot and this is a prime example. Every dime should go to the kids. Getting 12 million dollars after leaving that poor kid there is a travesty.

You guys with your holier than thou attitude are ridiculous. I'm not ashamed to admit that had I been in his situation I probably would have panicked and ran away as well. As would most if not all of you who are judging him so negatively. You have no idea how you would react to seeing something like that until you are actually in that situation and to look down your nose at him is incredibly ignorant. I'm not saying he took the best course of action, but he took the one that most of us would have probably taken.

No actually ignorance is for you to assume that those on this board who have spoken up are spineless. Just not a fact with me and I highly doubt the majority on this board are spineless sniveling pantywaists. You see when you live by a certain moral compass and respect for your fellow man there are some instances when you know in no uncertain terms how you would react. This is one of those for many, many people. I do feel bad that you would run away from a child in that situation. I am sure you have your reasons. Of the few on this board I know in person, there is not one who would not have stepped in to help that child. That I know. For the others my very best guess is that the VAST majority would do the same.TheMackAttack wrote:You guys with your holier than thou attitude are ridiculous. This isn't Ancient Greece. I see an old man fondling a 12 year old boy, I don't run the other way.

It appears some of the folks posting in this thread are mighty confident they would react perfectly if they rolled up on a horrific crime in progress. I hope you never have to test your mettle.

Where did you see or hear that Sandusky was fondling the little boy? Showering with the little boy is bad enough, but I never heard he was fondling him in that incident.AppinVA wrote:This isn't Ancient Greece. I see an old man fondling a 12 year old boy, I don't run the other way.

We are all well aware that you view yourself morally superior to the rest of us. You are acting as if being in that position people make a rational choice. They don't. Under stress people panic and often times don't make the ideal decision. That is what happened to Mike McQueary. I'm not arrogant enough to think that I would react ideally if I were in a situation like that which is why I don't judge him harshly. It's not a matter of knowing and acting on right or wrong. It's a matter of managing stress, disregarding your flight instinct, and fully understanding what you're witnessing. It does not make me a lesser person deserving of insults because I acknowledge that my fight vs flight instinct skews very much towards flight. It does not make me a lesser person because I'm naturally non-confrontational and passive. It doesn't make me a lesser person because I know that I don't handle stress nearly as well as I could. It does not make me a lesser person because I admitted these things. And it does not make me a lesser person because you look down your nose at me.

You may want to reread the order of posts...you began the accusations of moral superiority.TheMackAttack wrote:bcoach wrote:No actually ignorance is for you to assume that those on this board who have spoken up are spineless. I think we all hope we are never forced into a situation where we find out IF we would intervene.

Re: Penn State Whistle Blower gets $12 M
Frankly that response is pathetic. Your first sentence is an outright lie. I very plainly stated that I am only one of many in the APP family who would do the right thing. So I probably would not use " the rest of us" as I think you are very much in the minority. I will say again I am sorry you would not. I do acknowledge though that you have your reasons and have supplied a complete laundry list and that is your privilege to do so. This is a free country.TheMackAttack wrote:bcoach wrote:No actually ignorance is for you to assume that those on this board who have spoken up are spineless. One thing is evident, you have never performed a heroic act under extreme circumstances. Otherwise you would be a humble sole like those that have. I never suggested I know you personally, and my life will be fine if I never have such an opportunity. Since MM got 12M I am going to personally reward you the hero in waiting trophy as you are apparently the person most deserving of it. Congratulations AppinVA!!!AppinVA wrote:You don't know me.CVAPP wrote:One thing is evident, you have never performed a heroic act under extreme circumstances.
