College coach insanity hirings
Admittedly this isn't an App related thread but with the Satt coaching thing it sort of is. I was just reading about Charlie Strong going to South Florida and um Kiffin going to Florida Atlantic? Are you kidding me? Lord only knows how much those schools are going to pony up for these dudes who will both leave in a year or two.

Kiffin, I agree. Surprised he didn't get a bigger job, but then he's failed at every HC job he's ever had. But with smaller schools, sometimes they just want to make a splash with a name hire. Also, remember FIU hired Butch Davis, so maybe FAU felt they needed to hire a big name. Will be some interesting recruiting battles down there, for sure.
As for Strong, I think that's a great hire. He's 56 and just got fired from Texas - he may not get another top-tier HC opportunity. That could be a chance for USF to get their coach for the next 10-15 years. Plus, he's actually been a successful HC. USF doesn't need a rebuild, so they get a guy who can keep them rolling without missing a beat while he learns the ropes.

Say what you want about these coaches, but recruiting out of Florida just got ALOT harder!

Exactly! See how quickly those programs go from 3-9 to 9-3 and then watch for the fallout. The state of Florida recruiting is going to go bananas.JTApps1 wrote:Kiffin and Butch Jones in South Florida. How long until one or both schools is on probation???

I wouldn't say Kiffin has failed at every HC job he had. He was only at Tennessee a year but still manages a winning season (7-6) sandwiched between his predecessor (5-7) and successors (6-7) losing seasons. While at USC, his team was on probation the entire time with significant scholarship reductions, nobody wins like that and he was still over .500. Although he didn't make the splash at USC that many predicted and he was ultimately fired in the middle of the season, he never had a losing record at the school or any other college for that matter. I guess some can call that a failure, but it is a lot better than a great many of the coaches in the country.EastHallApp wrote:Kiffin, I agree. UT I'll give you - thought about that after I posted. USC - even with the probation he was signing top 10 classes every year, and their on-field results lagged their rankings, leading to him getting fired. I'll stick with calling that failure.t4pizza wrote:I wouldn't say Kiffin has failed at every HC job he had. How about this - he hasn't succeeded at any of his three HC jobs, and his successes as an OC have come at programs that were already the best in the country before he became coordinator.
