North Carolina State head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried will not return next season, WRAL confirmed Thursday.
Gottfried, who owns a 122-82 record in five-plus seasons with the Wolfpack and 47-55 in ACC play, will finish the season with the team but will not return for the final year of his contract.
“Mark and I met today to discuss the future direction of our program,” said Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. “While it has long been my practice to evaluate the body of work at season’s end, in reviewing the overall direction of our program, we believe a change in leadership is necessary moving forward. Our focus now remains on supporting our student-athletes and staff over the final weeks of our season.”

That change in leadership might ought to include Ms. Yow.asu66 wrote:FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS...THE SILLY SEASON IS HERE...

Let me see if I get this straight. Fire your coach but he's going to finish out the season?

I hope NC State wins the ACC Tournament and goes to the Sweet 16.

Word is the NCAA might be snooping around their program due to alleged payments to Dennis Smith to play at State

Word from where? Not that I'd doubt it - Adidas was pretty widely assumed to be a major factor in his recruitment.RollNeers wrote:Word is the NCAA might be snooping around their program due to alleged payments to Dennis Smith to play at State

Over on Inside Carolina there are a few reliable sources saying it.EastHallApp wrote:Word from where? I said years ago it was just a matter of time before the NCAA came lurking simply because Jim Harrick was/is a mainstay Sitting directly behind the bench as a team "mentor" and "personal advisor." Scandal has followed him everywhere.RollNeers wrote:Word is the NCAA might be snooping around their program due to alleged payments to Dennis Smith to play at State

NC State, the place known as the school coaches go to to blow up their careers in football and basketball.
I just hope our coaches are smart enough to see how dead end all of the acc coaching jobs are in NC. Hell, Duke might actually be the best one to launch from. Cut will probably leave it in pretty damn good shap when he goes. State has actually proven to be the worst of the four and it's not really close. Coaching turnovers alone prove that. But, it's much, much deeper.

I don't blame them for this one. Firing Tom Obrien a few years ago was silly.

I kind of blame them a little bit. He may have lost the team, he may not have. Definitely a bad year, but who are they going to get? They've got quotes from an unnamed "second tier" candidate already saying that no one should touch the job if 4 NCAAs in 6 years isn't good enough.Gonzo wrote:I don't blame them for this one. He went to the same amount of Sweet 16s that state had been to in the 20 years previous I think. I'm just wondering if it isn't like when they ran Sendek out with delusions of grandeur only to have to settle for candidate number 20 Sidney Lowe.

Re: 2017 Silly Season claims NC State's Gottfried as early victim
Getting rid of Sendek was the biggest bone head move they possibly could have made. The real problem at State is administration. They simply can't hire and support. When they do get a good one they don't support them, they dump them. They just have a cloud hanging over their heads. Great University horrible athletic administration.proasu89 wrote:Think you might mean Herb Sendek.Gonzo wrote:I don't blame them for this one. Firing Tom Obrien a few years ago was silly.
