According to a statement from a university official, the Coastal Carolina University cheerleading team has been suspended indefinitely pening investigation after an anonymous person at the school sent a letter accusing all of the members on the squad of a “long list of things, including prostitution, and purchasing alcohol for underage team members”.

“A cheerleader who spoke on the condition of anonymity said an investigator with the CCU Department of Public Safety came to their practice Wednesday night. The cheerleader said the investigator explained to the team an anonymous letter was mailed to school president David DeCenzo on March 7 alleging that team members were involved in “a long list of things,” including prostitution, purchasing alcohol for underage team members, and paying others to complete their homework assignments.

According to the cheerleader, the team was met by police outside the HTC Center after practice, who called the names of individual team members, and took them to CCU’s police station for questioning. During the questioning, the cheerleader said police searched through their cell phones. She said officers then told them they could leave around 11 p.m., after telling them they did nothing wrong.”

The entire cheerleading section of the CCU Athletics website has been completely removed and the entire cheerleading squad has been barred by the school from competing until further notice.

That must have been one hell of an anonymous letter.

The best thing for CCU is if the prostitution stuff is false and the academic stuff is somewhat true. It then justifies the suspension but doesn't sully their reputation that badly.

If everything is false, then CCU would have ended their season over a false accusation ala Duke Lacrosse and a strong Title IX argument could be made that the school wouldn't do this if it was a football or basketball team.

If the prostitution stuff is true....then they might as well blow up the program because they'll won't live it down for 20 years.

Anonymous complaints of this nature usually are the result of sour grapes. Someone was dropped from the squad for cause or someone didn't make the cut and has decided that if she can't enjoy the cheering experience, she's going to ruin it for everyone else. These folks usually get exposed.

In the unlikely event that the CCU squad has, in fact, gone to the Dark Side, the evidence will not be hard to uncover. This will be resolved soon--one way or another.

T-Dog's right. If the "call girl ring" accusation is substantiated, it'll stick to CCU's reputation like an ugly, back-alley tattoo.

You'd be surprised how often police go through the phones of people under "investigation" without the proper authority.

This really appears to be a reach and over reaction to me. I still believe in "innocent until proven guilty". You would think the Duke Lacrosse incident would make universities cautious about jumping the shark so quickly.
