MAC football
I know they play these Wednesday games- obviously don’t care about the fan experience. Western Michigan proof that as a G5 you better catch lightning in a bottle

Re: MAC football
I really think all college football teams would be better off playing only on Saturdays. I think showing mid-week games in empty stadiums hurts the overall state of college football more than it helps. People like me, that like sports, will still watch ESPN networks as long as they are covering teams competing. It really does not matter whether it is women’s volleyball or men’s water polo or a classic football replay I will watch. Just as long it not a bunch of sports analysts just talking about sports.

Re: MAC football
You really should only do midweek games at colleges where the majority of the home team fanbase doesn't have to travel to the game. NC State is a good example with a good portion of their fanbase being in Raleigh. South Carolina in Columbia. Having trouble thinking of a good G5 example...Houston or Memphis possibly.

Re: MAC football
It is not healthy for the student athletes , unless it comes after a bye week. If you ever played the game you will understand.

Re: MAC football
Even Memphis and Houston struggle in these games. Toledo is another prime example. Boise played uva earlier this year on a Friday and it was 3/4s full.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 8:45 amYou really should only do midweek games at colleges where the majority of the home team fanbase doesn't have to travel to the game. Re: MAC football
I agree and this is a point that a lot of NFL players have made. It's one reason I'm actually starting to hope that the Sun Belt shifts to more Tuesday/Wednesday games - because then you get the Saturday before and after off.

Re: MAC football
Also I think unless you're in a particularly warm weather climate (which obviously MAC schools aren't), it isn't going to help attendance to schedule night games after early October or so.

Akron got bowl eligible Tuesday night by upsetting our bowl opponent from the first Camellia Bowl, Ohio.

NIU's city has a population of 43,000. The MSA is 105,000 and chicago is an hours drive. IF we had that kind of close population we would draw 30,000 on a week night...maybe more.

Re: MAC football
To your point, most MAC school struggle with attendance any way, but I do believe after several years of MACtion the fan bases have slowly started to dwindle as they know half the games will be mid-week.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Re: MAC football
I know they do it for the money but come on - instead of having late season games where a 5-1 team is playing another 5-1 team (conference) where the outcome would be the conf championship game on a Saturday when fans could actually attend the game with all the pre-game excitement, tailgates, etc., it's on a Tue or Wed night --- this policy seems to benefit no one - players, fans, player families, community businesses, - it is all for the mighty $$$

Re: MAC football
I would hate it but it does probably inflate their national exposure as a conference. Most of those games if played on the weekend would not be likely either on TV or watched by many folks if they were. I'm not advocating that midweek games are good thing but there probably is one upside to them.

Re: MAC football
Athletic Departments especially in G5 conferences can’t have it both ways. Big pushes to sell tickets, especially season tickets have to suffer due to Wednesday and Thursday night games. Folks simply are not making those trips. With only 6 home games having one during the week probably causes some folks to back off from buying. No real market to resell those tickets. The P5’s don’t have to sell out for the precious TV money

Re: MAC football
The silver lining specific to App State around this scheduling subject is our AD is a big advocate for keeping as many App State games on Saturdays and at 3:30pm kicks. DG is the man!

I'm fine with one Thursday night home game a year, but beyond that I don't support playing on Tuesday or Wednesday for TV exposure at the detriment of ticket sales.

Re: MAC football
I think the experience really suffers with the mid week games. Those were some great MAC match ups this week, most with Conference Championship Game implications and the stands were basically empty. I make it to Boone for lots of the Sat games but simply can't make the trip from ATL since I still work for a living. App does better than most on Thursday nites but any Sat game is usually going to be a sell out. I'm not sure how much the mid week TV exposure of G5 teams helps with branding when the stadiums are empty and the atmosphere is of an empty forest. The wear and tear on athletes from both a physical standpoint and academic standpoint (mid week travel, missing classes) is real as well.

Re: MAC football
I watched some midweek MACtion this year I would not have watched on a Saturday, but I don't see how that benefits them.hapapp wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 12:05 pmI would hate it but it does probably inflate their national exposure as a conference. Recruiting-wise, how many kids want to play midweek games in empty stadiums?
Is it merchandising? I just wish somebody could help quantify the benefits of these midweek games. IMO, it has to be held more accountable than simply assuming there's value.

Re: MAC football
The MAC tv deal is crazy. Forgive me if I'm spelling out the obvious here, but for those who haven't actually looked at the MAC's schedule bear in mind that up until the last week of October, almost all of their games--conference or OOC--are on Saturday. They have some midweek games opening week, but it's pretty much a Saturday affair after that until the end of October.
Then they play just one Saturday game the last weekend in October and zero Saturday games for the rest of the regular season. Not one Saturday game in the month of November in the entire conference.
That's bonkers.
