If UT thinks that they're going to be returning to national title contender status anytime soon they're delusional.
Why should they settle for anything less though? You should go look at Alabama's yearly records before Saban, USC's before Carrol, Oklahoma's before Stoops, etc. Just because Tennessee has been slumping doesn't mean they can't return to national prominence. The right coach can absolutely get them back there, it'll probably take at least 5 years and maybe up to 10. Also, looks like they might stumble out of this thing with Gundy - which would be a homerun hire imo.

Oh I know, but I'm not sure UT is patient enough to go through a 4-5 year maturing process to get to that point. A&T's in the same boat, only except they don't have the pedigree UT has and thinks that just because they had a few good years with Manziel and a bid to the SEC that somehow they should be vying for NC's. I guess A&M's the more delusional school in that equation.

Interesting analogy today on the David Glenn show that somewhat encompasses this topic. Used the movie Groundhog Day in reference to schools like Tennessee and Nebraska. They were really good if not great 20 or more years ago. The movers and shakers at those schools fully believe they should be at the top every year and don’t mind going thru coach after coach every couple of years to make it happen. The word delusional was definitely used. While the ultimate goal of every FBS school should be to win the NC there should still be some level of realism that goes along with it. We have guys on this board who lose their minds when App loses to what is perceived to be an inferior opponent and we have others who believe the end all is to knock off a heavyweight. I want us to go 13-0 every year but if we go 9-4 with a bowl win I’m absolutely happy with that as well. Beats the hell out of being a doormat.

I think they're patient enough, it's just a matter of finding the right person. Look at Michigan for example. They haven't been in true contention for a National Championship in awhile and they've gone through multiple coaches trying to get to that level. In Harbaugh's third year this season they went 8-4. While historically that's far from a great season for Michigan, I don't think you currently see any Michigan fans turning on Harbaugh. This phrase is getting overused, but seriously "trust the process." I'm sure most Michigan fans still believe in Harbaugh and his longterm outlook for the program. If anyone can get them back to consistent contention, it's going to be a guy like him.

At Tennessee, it's clear Jones had lost control of that team. He had no problems getting talent to come play for him, he just couldn't coach it. Jones showed Tennessee is still a dazzling school for 4 and 5 star prospects, you just need someone to coach it. A guy like Gundy could probably do it.

Can you blame him? Why would anyone want to go there? They’ll find someone, but it won’t be someone established.

He turned down a 3 mill raise. That's how bad UT is right now.

Congratulations UT. You are on the precipice of achieving “Arkansas” and “Kentucky” relevance to SEC football.

Wow, I didn’t realize that. What a great nonconference win! The SEC truly is the best conf—

What’s that? Oh, you meant South Carolina. Nevermind.

Homegrown guys like Harbaugh are cut a bit more slack, if not there would be rumblings in AA.
