I am hopeful for an extension of our series with Wake. I am hoping we could play every few years.

Liberty also has Home and Home series on the books against other P5 schools: Virginia Tech, Virginia, Duke, & Syracuse, in addition to a few nice H&H's with G5/Indy schools like Army, BYU, Marshall, & UAB...among others. I've heard at least 2 H&H series with other P5's will be announced by May or so. Such is one of the benefits, if few, of being an Independent...lots of scheduling opportunities.

I think it's moreso a benefit of their collection plates.

They're paying some teams a lot of money to play in Lynchburg.

Last Sunday LU had an insert. In the Greensboro paper was a nice slick promo magazine. As much as I don’t care for LU they do make some nice slick promo magazines. The pics of the athletic facilities were impressive.

I still don’t care to play them but I would not withhold money from App over it or boycott the game. Amazing how much money they have.

As an ordained minister (yes really) I am going to take a stand for taxing churches and non-profits that have huge amounts of money coming in.

Liberty is a diploma mill one step above university of Phoenix. Easy to do things like that wil online tuition revenue.

There are a lot of private church related colleges and universities. Some have excellent athletic programs. Duke, ND, BC, SMU, BYU, just to name a few.

Liberty is an up and coming program and may rival those schools one day.

The main benefit of a non profit is a person can make a gift to it and it is tax deductible. Some of that benefit is going away. But keep in mind that almost all (state) schools and related alumni organizations are non profit and the same deductions apply as to Liberty.

People give for their own reasons. Giving to APP is often related to being a alum, or having relatives that go/went there. We believe in the school, the atmosphere or culture surrounding the school, etc. Folks give to a Liberty for all the same reasons. But they have one more... it's part of their religion. And it may be world wide, not regional. They may never go to Liberty, see Liberty or know anything about Liberty except it represents a part of their belief system and they believe Liberty will graduate fine young Christian men and women.

Don't be upset that they can get a lot of money. They've got the whole world to draw from. And also keep in the back of your mind that money and power tend to eventually corrupt. Remember Jim Baker? And now (maybe) Joel Osteen. Meanwhile, just watch from a distance.

Does Duke have any ties to a religious organization now?

WFU severed all ties some years ago. Meredith College has done the same. Pretty sure Davidson had done so as well.

All still have chapels on campus and religious studies degrees but not ones tied to a specific church that controls or funds the colleges.

Now ND, and BC being closely tied to the Catholic Church still have some conections. BYU does to the Morman Church connection but lots of privates have disconnected from a founding religious body, though not all.

I agree with you that many churches should be taxed. I however would not object to a game with liberty if they paid us like they are paying ODU this fall. Happy birthday, btw.

Davidson is still affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. As late as 2015, and still may be the case today, the president of the college had to be a Presbyterian. There are still significant historical and financial ties between the college and the church.

What's the argument for taxing religious organizations and not all existing NPOs?

Just curious....what does this have to do with ECU and Wake scheduling a football series?

Seems like that went to the wayside on post TWO. That might be a record for the MMB as far as time to go off original topic in a thread.

True.

Religion finds it's way into everything apparently.

A good number have become political action committees that primarily serve that purpose as their primary objective.

Wouldn't they then just re-register as C3s (or whatever the political one is)?

Probably. I majored in economics so taxation isn't my specialty.

I live in a wealthy resort area. Many churches are like wealthy private county clubs. The buildings and programs are for the "certain people". My former church which is the largest and most prominent actually kicked out a long time parishioner who was on oxygen and would make unpleasant noises during the Sunday performance. They asked him to find another church and asked those who drove him weekly to no longer bring him. It is all about the perception and the performance.

I don't want to make this thread too political as we don't have a politics to send it to, but sure tax 'em all. No need to just deal with religious organizations. Just b/c I said tax the churches doesn't mean I would not want to tax all NPO's for fairness sakes.

Asked the same question. After I read your post I still scanned the rest of the responses and still nothing regarding Wake v ECU. I don’t think I even know what the thread is about. I enjoy reading and responding to posts but I swear we have guys here that simply try to outword the next guy. Geez
