UNC-C Hire

Will Healy, who turned around a moribund Austin Peay football program in his three seasons with the Governors, has accepted the football coaching position with the Charlotte 49ers, a source confirmed to the Observer Tuesday.

Healy, 33, replaces Brad Lambert, who was fired in November after the 49ers went 5-7 last season. Healy, whose three seasons at Austin Peay are his only head coaching experience, will be among the youngest coaches in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision.

Known as a first-rate recruiter, Healy, who played at Richmond, was an assistant at Chattanooga for six years before going to Austin Peay, where he had a three-year record of 13-21. His first Governors team went 0-11, but they went 8-4 in 2017, narrowly missing the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Austin Peay went 5-6 this past season.

The 49ers offered former James Madison coach Mike Houston the job last week, but withdrew it after Houston said publicly he wanted to also consider other options. Houston was hired at East Carolina on Monday.

As a UNCC alumni, I will take anyone who has proven themselves to turn a dumpster fire around. I really do not think UNCC would find someone like Houston when there are bigger schools and great opportunities still open (App).

Plus, Charlotte still struggles getting the best local kids. Most want to move away from Mom and Dad and having someone who is young and inspiring may help bring more local kids to the program.

It’s a nice hire for Charlotte. Not quite the splash of the Houston announcement but he will inject some excitement into their program that they desperately need.

I’m not really familiar with how he’s done at austin peay but good for them.

His recruiting was really good. He had the #1 FCS class twice in three years. Results on the field are mixed. I like his enthusiasm and personality. I'm a little worried about his ho-hum record. I give him a pass on his first season as AP was beyond dumpster fire status when he took over. Year 2 was good. This season is the one that gives me pause.

Overall I think it's a decent hire. At a minimum he should inject some excitement in recruiting and with the players.

Definitely not the home run hire Mike Houston would have been. Decent hire at best as said above. Having top ranked FCS classes is arbitrary at that level.

But young, inexperienced, not a stellar record - IMO this hire gets the big 💩💩💩

I don't know much about this guy but he's just a kid...on the surface this does not look like a good hire so there must be more to it. I get being a "good recruiter" but that will only get you so far if you're not a winner. I really don't get it...

The best team in the NFL is coached by a guy a year younger than Healy. Y’all are gonna have to get past the reverse-ageism.

Will Heely seems like a fine young man with plenty of energy but someone please help me with something. It is being stated he turned Austin Peay around but his record was 13-21 in his 3 years.

2016 0 - 11
2017 8 - 4
2018 5 - 6

One winning season in his three years at Austin Peay. Again, seems like a very likable guy but what am I missing?

He's clearly the exception and unless there's something else that's extremely compelling about this UNCC guy I wouldn't have taken a chance on him. But perhaps he's a child prodigy. Time will tell.

In my humble opinion, the 9'ers are just taking who they are able to get to come there for the money they are willing or able to pay as well as expecting said person to put out the dumpster fire this fledgling program has encountered. But who knows, the kid may turn things around. Doubtful but stranger things have happened in sports.

I dont know what y'all will pay your new coach but we offered Houston over a million dollars. Healy will make 700k but can make around a million i believe if he wins a cusa championship and a bowl game.

I have no idea, because there were conflicting estimates on here and his informal work with Yosef paid more than most on here would admit in addition to bonuses for playing in and winning bowl games, winning the conference championship, academic performance of players, etc. Question is, how does their pay compare to what other C-USA coaches earn.

From what I've heard of Healy he's all about culture and body language. Act like a winner and you'll be a winner.

Winning CUSA is much easier than SBC. We beat UNCC and their runnner up by 30+, and our 7th best team beat their champ by 20.

If a football coach can win any games at Austin Peay he has to have some redeeming qualities, some skill, something good resonating with him.
