Sad state of affairs in Cullowhee
Things have really gone bad over at WCU. They are 1-5 on the season, with their only victory coming against Div. 11 North Greenville. I doubt they win another game this year. Before the start of last season, they extended a new contract to Mark Spier thru 2025. I hate this for them. Proud to be a Mountaineer!

If would be really easy to kick them while they’re down, so I won’t. Their administration seems to only have a football team so they can showcase their band. That’s not a good way to run an athletics program. I would say that one day they will turn it around, but I honestly never see it happening. The culture is too toxic.

I really thought that Spier was turning them around. Had a good season or two and then back to ugliness. I was hoping for Coach's sake that he had it going in the right direction. Do they have an inordinate number of injuries or can anyone say?

Maybe I’m too young to remember when this rivalry was truly a rivalry, but seeing Western down is just sad to me. I get no joy from it like I would for, say, GaSouthern.
I hope they can figure out how to right the ship and become a nice FCS program.

When is the last time Western would be considered "good" in football? 1980's? Is there any one reason that their football program fell into decline in the 1990's? I started following App football as a kid in the late 1990's so was hoping some of the older fans might have an answer.

They've had a few winning season in the past decade, but 1983 was the last time they won more than 7 games. Speir had a few decent season early in his tenure.AppStAlum2007 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2019 11:24 amWhen is the last time Western would be considered "good" in football? 1980's? I went to their family weekend game two weeks ago. They played Gardner Webb. They played a really good game. They lost on a last second field goal. They had a decent crowd, but they were not loud. Lots of people left after the band played halftime. It’s not beyond saving, but they do need to work on the football culture.

I consider Mark a good friend. Scott may need to make new spot on his staff.
WCUs football culture is indeed lacking.

Back in the 70s and early 80s Western owned us when Bob Waters was their coach. Since then the Catamounts have lost their catnip.BeauFoster wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2019 12:05 pmThey've had a few winning season in the past decade, but 1983 was the last time they won more than 7 games. I don't like seeing them down. I don't like seeing them at all.
Seriously, what do I care if some girl I dated ten years ago gets knocked up?

Kinda sad to see what's happened to the socon as a whole. Furman is the only team ranked in the top 25. I remember when there were 4, 5, 6 socon teams ranked. UTC should've been the heir apparent but they can't get it going. Watch out for Clay Hendricks though. He's really turned Furman around. Could be on several G5 short lists in the next few years.

Re: Sad state of affairs in Cullowhee
I could care less if we ever see them on the schedule again. During my 25 years following ASU somewhat closely, they've been a rival in name only. I think I recall them winning once (maybe twice)? No one on the team or really associated with the program knows them as a competitive rival anymore and the game wouldn't have much excitement. It would be similar to ETSU this year, where we tried to manufacture some drama. Except WCU, in their current form, would be an even worse game.
