Danny Manning Fired

The writing has been on the wall. He was never able to translate his recruits into wins. I have always thought he was a great guy, a wonderful ambassador for any program, a college basketball legend but it just hasn't quite clicked for him as a Head Coach. He will be very sought after as an assistant and maybe he rejoins the head coaching ranks in a few years. Wake Forest is a hard place to recruit to; high academic standards and being so close to two powerhouses. I am really hoping their administration and search committee overlook Kerns, but if he gets an interview it will be a tough pass for them. I think he is the type of coach they need right now but I'm banking on them going for a more high profile assistant (one of the Duke guys) or out of work Head Coach. Either way I'll be holding my breath until they hire someone.

Hopefully they will consider Kerns beneath them. I bet they will look for a big name.

Manning’s buy-out is reported to be $15M. A big name likely is unaffordable. Miller from UNC-G is a possibility

The name I heard rumored within the coaching ranks a few months ago was John Belein - Have heard no follow-up but that would be a great hire ---

That would be a good choice. He did exceptionally well at Richmond — a small private school with historical Baptist ties. He certainly understands the landscape.

But the question is does he want to have to deal with unreasonable expectations and recruiting against the big dogs. He did great at Michigan with Mich St down the road but Michigan as a program was in a much better place as a national brand than Wake currently. But hey this is the same guy who left a great situation to go to the dumpster fire that is the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Am hearing that they might not have the $$$ for Belein - hearing Wes Miller and Steve Forbes would be possibles if they go a less expensive route ---

Wes Miller would be a good hire, the young man can coach em up.

Zero worry about Kerns landing an ACC job after one 18-15 season. Miller, Forbes, Ryan Odom would be obvious candidates, though I’m sure there are others.

Wake already knows who they want and have figured out how to pay for him. They’ve had six weeks study their next move. I’m betting they’ve already negotiated and all the next guy has to do is sign on the dotted line.

You're are all over it. Taking Manning down was almost a foregone conclusion since the Deacs lost at Charlotte way back in November (just a few days before the Apps took the '9ers down at HCC). The new guy and his agent just have to make certain there's no "trap language" in the contract and that there's enough $,$$$,$$$ there to cover the agent's cut for each year of the deal.

If it's Forbes (which I doubt), the contract language may limit his dependency on JuCo talent. That's waaay-waaay beneath Wake's dignity.

Ryan Odom’s wife is an APP grad.

I see that two of the Freshmen who have signed LOIs with Wake have asked to be released. I wonder if Kearns is interested in either of them.

Just my opinion but I think Miller would have been a better fit at Wake...at least philosophically. Both of them certainly have winning histories.

I agree on Miller, but I don't know if would want the Wake job. He knows first hand what the pressures are and how much of a disadvantage Wake is in when it comes to competing for recruits and attention with two power houses right down the street

Forbes had P5 coaching experience and Miller didn’t.

Wes Miller has to be on the short list for the job at UNC when Roy is done...why take the Wake job?

Any chance ETSU looks towards Kerns? He’s from that area. He and his family were really repping the Black & Gold on the Yosef Club tour tonight. GO APPS!!
