Elon going independent in football this year.

Elon is going to attempt football as an independent per Greensboro paper this morning. The CAA suspended the conference but is giving schools the option to go out on their own if it is safe.

Purely hypothetical, but if all App could do was in state games AND Elon insisted on a home and home in the same year would that be good enough.?

What if football this year ended up being home and home with WCU, Elon , Charlotte, A&t, ECU and one more FCS school like Campbell or G-W?. What if we had to take in Davidson? If all were home and home that would be 12 games.

I am trying to avoid mowing the yard so wasting time on absurd posts. The part about Elon is true though.

Also on a typo so apologies for a ton on typos.

Appalachian state football will never play in Burlington, the wee or any other fcs stadium ever again. You don’t play an away game at a school that is in a lower division. It would also be a financial loss for them. They would have to pay up so much money it would be a wash because they don’t have enough room or enough fans to cover that bill

I am thinking more about just getting games in likely without crowds or very small crowds were stadium size did not matter. None would require hotels. If the only way to get 12 games in were home and home with a lot of in-state FCS and all the G5 would that be worse than not having a season.

Very true but I was thinking more along the lines of required in-state travel only regardless of distance.

What if we played every FBS team in the state home-and-home for 12 games and avoided any FCS teams?

There are seven FBS teams in the state so it's six opponents that would be 12 games if each was home at home and again thanking without any crowds so stadium size would be a non-issue.

Great Idea. Crown a State champion. What excitement it would create.

The reality is that if it came to this there would be no football at all but this would minimize cost since buses are cheaper than planes to fly and no hotels will be needed and and the big expenses of coaches salaries are an already sunk cost. you might be able to get enough of a crowd to at least offset the cost of the buses to run from one city to the next.

JMU is also still pursuing a football season.

If they want to come up Boone to open our 2020 season, I’m all for that.

right now I'll take any football. Don't care who we play, just want to play. Even if it's a shortened schedule.

Why not 4 to 6 games in the fall, and 4 to 6 more in the spring?

There are 7 FBS and 7 FCS teams in the state (counting Davidson). Elon could easily say they are up for a game but they want a return in the same year. The 7 FCS schools could band together and lock us out with their own home and home and if the Prig 5 schools did the same then it could be ECU, Charlotte and App playing each other 6 times each if the goal was 12 games.

Personally I would be up for a home and home with anyone in the state that is D1 for this year only if that is the only way to get to a full season if that is all that was possible due to the financial considerations of hotels and travel. I would prefer that be with FBS but would not be upset with Elon and WCU. There is enough history with both to make a compelling story line in these odd times.

Could that be done in one day? Bus up in the morning play and bus back. A meal on the way up and on the way back and the bus cost would be the expense for either team.

That idea for the NC only home and home is great. All same day bus rides. Easy Peasy lemon squeezie

Only if everyone were to do the same. That means NC State going to Campbell. That means Duke coming to Boone. CHeat going to A&T, etc. We’ve fought too hard to get where we are to give an inch alone. Even given the circumstances, the damage would be irreparable to do so on our own.

There is zero reason to play at Burlington. I am not big on playing them at all. They have everything to gain and we have everything to lose. We can get our backups playing time against the bottom half of the SBC or Charlotte rather than play Elon. I'm fine with it if we play just 10 games.

Here is a financial question on even playing FCS teams right now. Can we even afford to play them in Boone? Wouldn't they want 200-300k for coming to Boone? How can we pay that check when we lose our P5 games? We need money ourselves and I don't see any way we make enough money off the game with all the restrictions to pay these FCS teams what they would want.

Believe it or not but if I had to pick between JMU or Elon I rather play JMU. However, I refuse to go back to Burlington or even JMU unless they are FBS. You don't play road games to FCS teams when you are FBS.

Think about this. Crowd is just 6-8k and we walk in there already having a hard time getting up for a lower game but now you combine the fact there is no crowd and it is the perfect storm for an upset. They can come to Boone but we would be stupid to go to their places. There is nothing to gain from it. I rather have a shortened season than do that. 10 games would not be an awful thing. We would also have the SBC title game, if we handle our business. However, we lose to one of those teams on the road and we can forget being ranked again for a long time.

I was thinking about this with no crowds or maybe 1,000 at best so there would be no money to share. They pay their own cost to come to Boone and we would do the same in return and there are two games.

Also this was proposed as a "what if" if the ONLY course of action was to stay in state and there was no SBC games and no crowds or VERY small crowds of a few 100 or 1,000 at most.

There are 14 D1 teams in the state so we could not all do home and home then or we could split the state in half and have 2 divisions of 7 with home and home and a championship game in Charlotte to allow plenty of social distancing for 3 or 4 thousand fans. But yes, if it went that way I would expect it to be done fairly. Without crowds the location does not matter as much. This is all predicated on no out of state competition and no crowds so no money to exchange and if home and home each school has to travel equal amounts and take on those costs equally.

Though if the ACC teams were to buy into this I am sure we could do the 7 FBS schools on a home and home and let the 7 FCS do a home and home and not even mix the two up. There are 13 DII schools that could have something with 2 divisions and if they brought in the one NAIA team in the state they could have two divisions of 7 schools each for one year. There are 5 DIII schools with football. I have no idea about junior college football in the state or some of the other college associations like USCAA or NCCAA.

With 14 teams, we could cut a few.
