Re: UTC Buys Out Shulman's Contract
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Chattanooga has fired men's basketball coach John Shulman after nine seasons. His last winning season was 2009, when he last led the Mocs to the NCAA tournament.
University officials announced Shulman's dismissal Wednesday.
Interim chancellor Dr. Grady Bogue said in a statement that officials talked with Shulman, and they all decided the Mocs needed a new coach.
Shulman took over in 2004 and leaves as the Mocs' second-winningest coach. He led the Mocs to the Southern Conference title and first NCAA tournament berth in his first season, Chattanooga's first since 1997. He won Chattanooga's 10th Southern Conference tournament title in 2009, and that team's NCAA tournament run was celebrated on ''Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.''
That was the Mocs' last winning season, and season ticket sales had fallen since then.
