Re: Spier out at WCU
Yeah, this will be an interesting hire. Western's new AD, Alex Gary, logged three years as a baseball player for the purple kitties before transferring as a senior and obtaining his first degree from VCU. I'm not certain what that says about Western's academics at that time, his expressed love for WCU and his return to the 'whee now.
Anyway, the guy has apparently become a successful fundraiser during stops at UNCC, Maryland, Michigan and most recently at Oregon State. His press release on Spier's dismissal indicated that he had a different direction in mind for the program. It's not clear what he meant by that statement. Maybe just a restart with a coaching staff that fits his vision and his approach to the game. Maybe something else... It should be interesting since he has begun the stereotypical "national search" for the next WCU head football coach.
Both in funding the entire WCU athletic program, addressing its major facilities needs and in building a football program from the get-go--this guy really, really has his work cut out for him.

Re: Spier out at Western
The way I view it, western is in our rearview mirror in football. I doubt our recruiting overlaps theirs much anymore They haven’t been back to the playoffs since their title game in 1983. I have no reason not to hope they do well. There’s a lot of North Carolina west of Asheville and from an economic development standpoint it would be great for the region west of Asheville for western to develop a winning tradition and attendance. We can see the economic benefits of that here on the mountain.

Re: Spier out at Western
I would not consider 3 yrs at 7-4, 7-5 and 7-5 (during 2012-2017) "really winning" there. He also had a bunch of only 1-3 win seasons there. It looks bad. But, he knew when he went there that the school was not going to support him. He is a nice guy but you also have to be somewhat selective in moves to advance your career. Time will tell if the 9 years will help his career or another move may have served him better.T-Dog wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 5:56 pmSpier being hired by Western in December 2011 was the first domino that led to Satterfield coming back and saving the program.
Someone can win there. Spier won there in 2014-2017, but I think the game passed him by in some ways.
I doubt it'll happen, but Western should kick the tires on PJ3.

Re: Spier out at Western
Western should offer Will Healy. He's maxed out at Concord and he is a good fit for Cullowhee- FCS losing experience, and can you imagine "Cullowhee Lit"? *;)

Re: Spier out at Western
uncheat talked Mack out of retirement. Maybe UCLA can talk Spurrier into taking the job. UCLA >/= USC for under-achieving; he'd be use to it.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 1:31 pmWestern should offer Will Healy. We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Spier out at Western
Cantamounts hire Kerwin Bell as new Head Football Coach. I think they did pretty good with the hire.

Bell is a good coach. If anyone is gonna have success there, he should. They will have to step up every aspect of their athletic fundraising though, as their facilities are lacking even those of a D2 school in many regards.

Re: Spier out at Western
That is a good hire, Western may be competing for a conference title in football soon enough. I mean, if VMI can win it, why not Western?

Re: Spier out at Western
So if Bell can get them competing for conference championships soon, what does that say about Spier’s coaching ability?

Re: Spier out at Western
Mark brought in an App State style of play, especially on Defense that may, in the long run have ticked off a lot of old App haters. If anyone knows where Mark lands please post it.

L.O.F.T. is and has been their main problem. Without any significant talent it doesn’t matter who is coaching. Hate that Coach Speir lost his job.

Re: Spier out at Western
Yep. The leadership that brought him in failed to give him the right support. New leadership may give that support, but it’s logical that they would want to do so with their hires.
Having said that, it’s still debatable the success Speir would’ve had with the right amount of support, but he would have at least had a fighting chance.

Of course. Great assistants don’t always make the move up successfully. He will be fine , and find a good fit within the network.

He has head coaching experience at the DII level, doesn't he? I thought he had coached at Valdosta State

I think he was referring to Spier not having HC experience prior to WCU.

You are right, but, we old heads have seen the day 7-3, 7-4, and 7-5 consecutively would have seemed outstanding for us.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 11:17 amI would not consider 3 yrs at 7-4, 7-5 and 7-5 (during 2012-2017) "really winning" there.
