WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW men’s basketball coach Buzz Peterson added his second assistant coach in as many weeks on Tuesday when former Appalachian State head coach Houston Fancher joined the Seahawk coaching staff.

Fancher, 47, has worked at Tennessee the last four seasons, including the last two years as Director of Basketball Operations for the Volunteers. He is reunited with Peterson after serving as an assistant coach at ASU from 1996-2000. When Peterson left Boone to accept the head coaching post at Tulsa, Fancher was elevated to head coach of the Mountaineers.

This is fantastic news for both Buzz AND Houston! UNC-Wilmington is very fortunate to have this coaching duo!

I wish Fancher well but still pull for any team coached by Scuzz to lose.

Do I have all of this straight
Buzz hires Fancher as his asst
Buzz leaves and Fancher takes over
Fancher is gone and Buzz takes over
Buzz leaves
Buzz hires Fancher as his asst at a different schooll

I guess I'm happy for Fancher but BP will always be a flake that I wish nothing but losing seasons.

Actually its a little more complicated:
Buzz hires Fancher as asst
Buzz leaves and Fancher takes over
Buzz is fired from new school
Fancher is gone and Buzz takes over
Fancher is hired by school Buzz was fired from
Buzz leaves again
Buzz hires Fancher at his new school

Not exactly accurate.......
*Buzz was not fired from Tulsa which is where he went after he left App the first time because it was a higher level position and better for his family. Can't blame the man for wanting to climb the coaching status ladder. He won the NIT with Tulsa. Then......
*Tennessee came calling. He could be closer to his parents. (UT is his Dad's alma mater.)
*Things didn't progress as fast as UT wanted so he was fired. Bruce Pearl was hired and eventually fired for some kind of sinister doings....don't know all the details.
*Came back to App with full intention of staying on until.....
*App AD would not even return his phone calls to talk about his contract.

Maybe because the ink was barely dry. Expecting a guy like Scuzz to honor the full term of a contract would be laughable. He is the antithesis of JM.

You left out his stint at CCU.

Also, could you elaborate on the bold part? Perhaps I missed this, but I don't remember ever hearing anything about this. I do remember hearing that he notified CC while on his way to Wilmington, so CC had to tell the players. I also remember him saying that he wanted to put down "roots" in Boone, and become a mainstay at ASU...only to say the exact same things in Wilmington a year later. I'm interested to hear what was wrong with his contract after one season.

I'm sorry, but staying for one season is not full intention of staying. Full intention of staying would not include wanting to talk contract after one season.. this just proves he was using us as a stepping stone again..

"Oh, you don't want to talk about my contract after a year even though I told you and the rest of the fan base I want to stay here for good? Ok, I will do what I am famous for and just leave for more money again!"

I'm surprised he still has a job after winning 33 games in 3 seasons. Who knows, Fancher could be the next coach at UNCW this time next year.

As much disdain as I have for Buzz and the still entire situation he enabled and drug us through for 10+ years, there's no doubt that we were destined for big things before he slithered out the first time. Given the struggles at UNCW, it makes pretty good sense for him to try to replicate the last time he really had everything clicking. No, I won't be shocked if he slithers out of there somehow and Fancher is running the show down there in a few years. I won't even be shocked if he brings Fancher to his next destination. And yes, I'm "over" the Capel hire. It would be crazy for us to give him the experience he should have had when he was hired just to let another school have a young, undervalued coach with pedigree and now some experience. We need stability and consistency more than we need another transitional staff. I, for one, wish UNCW the best of luck and hope they make the most of what will certainly be a limited amount of time until Buzz puts a knife in the back of nearly everyone within reach.
