"Noting that SoCon hoops power Davidson is leaving the league in 2014 for the Atlantic 10, Baucom quipped: "Now that Davidson is gone, the Southern Conference is a lot more attractive."
I would be embarrassed if an App coach said this.

Thats exactly the attitude that makes the VMI addition an embarrassment. The Socon is adding an athletics program that is satisfied with what they've got, a sub par athletics program. Where is the commitment to excellence? VMI seems to get more from the Socon than the Socon gets from VMI.
But The Citadel is happy, and thats aalll that matters!

I believe he said it tongue in cheek. After all, the article stated he quipped, something said in jest.

I wish the SoCon the best of luck, but I could care less now. They are trying to fill the voids left by four of their better schools, App, GSU, Davidson, and CofC. I think they know they are in a little trouble now, and the fact that VMI, along with schools like Western, are excited because we're all gone shows that they want to be best in a lack-luster conference, while they know that we would wipe the tables with them.

I looked up the SoCon Champions for each sport this season to see what kind of impact the 4 teams leaving would make and it's even larger than most of the remaining schools realize. App, GSU, CofC, and Davidson have won 9 out of the 18 sports that have finished their season. App has also won 2 regular season titles, and these four schools have 5 runner up finishes this year. No wonder Citadel and Furman wanted all of us out!

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I will continue to follow the SoCon and wish the conference well after ASU leaves. I'm thrilled to be moving to the Sunbelt but the SoCon has been home for a long time. I'll still follow the FCS playoffs as well. I will become more interested in the New Orleans Bowl though!

I say that I will but without TV coverage by 2015 I doubt I will.

Agree. I may watch a playof game or two if it involves a SoCon team or a team like Montana that we've had experience with. Other than that I won't go out of my way to watch. I enjoyed the rivalries in the SoCon and am thankful that they gave App a home in our move to DI athletics. But my interest lies with App and I'll shift my focus to the Sun Belt. I'm sure I'll still look at the standings and catch an occasional game (if on TV), but that's probably the extent of it.

Listening to local sports radio here in Charleston yesterday and they were talking with a guy who is closely tied to Citadel athletics about the future of the Southern Conference. I really don't think The Citadel is happy about what is occurring. One thing he did say was he thinks the conference is surprised how powerful the private schools are. (Reading the MMB, maybe?). One rumor he was really concerned about is the talk of merging the SoCon with the Big South. Yikes!! Thankful we are leaving.

The private schools have always run the SoCon.
