As expected, VMI, ETSU, and Mercer were extended invites today.

Damn.
I was hoping this news wouldn't even get a mention on the MMB.

I don't have a dog in this fight any more, but I'm happy for VMI and ETSU. I'm a long-time admirer of the Keydets and the personal discipline it takes to get a signed sheet of parchment from their institution. They never should have left the SoCon. Their institutional leadership got it wrong; and their alumni and friends have never accepted the digs in the Big South.
I was once a dyed-in-the-wool "hater" of Buc basketball; but looked forward to going to every App-ETSU game (home or away) because I knew it was going to be a war. I was never disappointed in anything concerning those games except too many of the final scores.
I wish them both well unless or until they appear on our future schedules.

After we leave, ETSU will be my FCS team. My daughter is in grad school there.

I agree, the best I remember we had some pretty good games with both of these teams.

They didn't eat our lunch, though. That was Western doings.
Couldn't resist.

I may have to pull for Mercer in the new SoCon. Bobby Lamb has given his all to Appalachian, including his son.

Ill be pulling for Mercer as well. For how much misery App has put that guy through over the years, he deserves a break. Plus he is gonna be chomping at the bit to get after Furman which is always a good thing from an App perspective

Well actually they did a few years in both football and basketball. (And remember the SoCon was much beefier then as well)
Football
Appalachian State 12 1986, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012
VMI 7 1951, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1974, 1977
Basketball
Appalachian State 2 1979, 2000
East Tennessee State 6 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2003, 2004
VMI 3 1964, 1976, 1977
Kind of like WCU has owned us in baseball.
Western Carolina 9 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2003
Appalachian State 1 1984
You best let it go, you're starting to look a little silly!

Neither of those teams "ate our lunch", particularly in football. 5 of those 7 years you list for VMI came before App was in the SoCon. Can't eat our lunch if we aren't eating in the same restaurant. Head to head records:
Football
VMI: 20-4-2
ETSU: 32-13-1
Basketball
VMI: 37-28
ETSU: 49-76
Baseball
VMI: 66-30
ETSU: 74-55
With the exception of ETSU basketball, who was a powerful mid-major program in their heyday, we got the better of both schools in every major sport. ETSU has had a very good basketball history and have at least been competitive with us historically in baseball but VMI is not our athletic peer in any sense and they are much worse now than they were back then.

I didn't say they ate it every year, or would now (really I haven't keep up with either team lately), just that we use to have good game. But some ppl can't remember past 2005, so I thought I'd remind them.
Pretty much all the 70's APP and VMI were neck and neck, but they pulled out two conference titles (I don't think we ever pulled out a Football title with them in the Socon). ETSU pretty much owned the 90's in basketball (with Chatt).

You talk about reminding people who can't remember past 2005 and then say you don't think we won a SoCon title with VMI in the conference? VMI was in the SoCon until 2003, we won the conference in 1986, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 1999 before they left.
The only time App and VMI were competitive at all was in the 70's as App was still transitioning into Division I and we were 2-1 against them in the 70's. We won 17 of our last 18 games against VMI and most of them were not competitive. VMI left the SoCon because they could not compete. It really does not do justice to App athletics to imply they were even close to being an equal, then or now.
ETSU is at least worth discussing because of their basketball program and recent uptick in baseball. I'd love to continue playing them regularly in baseball and basketball but we do not belong on the same football field as either ETSU or VMI. That may come off as arrogant but it is the truth. VMI is a fine institution and I respect them in that regard but as an athletic department, we are on an entirely different level.
