….thought they were still playing until they weren’t.

Looks like only Troy and Ark St will have a post season. I thought the league was tough enough to have a couple more teams in a tournament, but there are likely metrics I’m not aware of. Even the SoCon has four teams in post season play (Wofford-NCAA, UTC/Samford/Furman-NIT).

There are 68,000 teams already in the NCAA tourney. Get rid of the NIT and CBI. When only 32 teams made the tourney I can understand having the NIT as a compensation tourney for 32-64 who had great years but didn't make the cut. The NIT and CBI are back filled with mediocre teams and some losing record teams that are undeserving of a post season. I guess it won't be much longer before they have a 4th tourney for all the left over teams so now one feels bad.

What’s wrong with the NIT? The records of a lot of those mid majors suggest they didn’t have mediocre years at all. We were that team in the NIT last year btw. And the way the NCAA tourney is set up, a 29 win mid major will never get in over a 19-15 Texas school so the NIT is a pretty nice consolation prize. If the kids want to keep their season goin a couple more weeks who is it hurting?

There’s not 68,000 teams in the NCAA tournament. I just checked and that’s inaccurate.

We were 68,002. South Alabama is in front of us.

Gill needs to go for sure or I am at the point where I hope we are looking to leave the Sun Belt and get the top teams in the league to go with us. I am hoping something happens with the AAC or Pac-12 so 4-6 of the top programs in the Sun Belt can go together.

The Sun Belt is the only conference that makes any sense at all, because it is the only one that is regional.
The AAC or Pac-12 would blead App dry. I know it, you know it, and the American People know it.

From a money standpoint it would bleed us but either Gill is going to have to step up or I could see App and some others look to do something. I know we were not happy with the mid-week games, revenue sharing, and other things before this NIT issue and Gill definitely got some people upset with his reaction.

I’ve been told that it’s apparent to many that Gill is more interested in promoting himself than the conference and its members . No one I talk to has anything positive to say regarding his job performance.

I’m sure this topic will probably go completely off the subject but I think it makes zero sense for the G5’s not to be in completely regional conferences for fans and travel cost purposes. I don’t know how many teams there are but to me it would make way more sense to have us with UNCC, ECU, Marshall, CCU, the Ga teams, JMU, etc.
Theoretically our teams should all be a bus ride away from every other school. A home football game against Texas State or South Alabama does little for fan excitement as opposed to the other teams closer to Boone.

I am fine with a conference setup for football similar to SBC with some changes that require team additions....have enough teams in both divisions where you only play West in SBC championship game.

The problem is what’s regional? You listed what is regional for us, but for JMU, regional means something a little different, and a lot different for the Georgia schools when especially compared to JMU and Marshall. South Alabama makes more sense for Georgia State than for us or Marshall. And I really like the Troy series, so it’s not necessarily about distance.

I agree. The SBC is more regional than most, but it could be much better. I'm really hoping Texas State heads to the PAC before long. Bring in someone in the middle of the footprint. At this point I don't care which of the top contenders get chosen as none of them would be much different than Texas State. The Bobcats have been okay in a lot of sports but haven't won anything meaningful. LT, JSU, WKU or MTSU would be no worse and would save everyone travel time and money.
Ultimately, I hope we end up in the eastern conference everyone has discussed for years. It almost happened a few years ago. Perhaps the anticipated big realignment around 2030 will get us there.

Time and time again he panders to other conferences in the media vs. promoting SBC programs.

unfortunately in the corporate world I've found that asskissers often do better than people good at their job at advancement.
I'd like to say that the best way for him to advance is to do a good job as SBC commissioner, but its probably not true.

It is not what you know, it is not who you know, it is not who you do, it is what you have on other people that matters.

I would like to be in regional conference where all the teams are in the same time zone. We have that now in the Sun Belt East. Give the Sun Belt East an auto bid for the NCAA tournaments and the college football playoff and Appalachian State University would be set for even greater greatness.
