How's that, coach? UNC-A 75, UNC-W 61

It's terribly unsportsmanlike to snicker at the misfortune of others. I know better; I was certainly taught better by my parents; my wife and I taught our son better; and I normally conduct myself better--but sometimes temptation gets the best of me. This is one of those times. Too "good" to pass up!

On Saturday, UNC-Asheville hosted that CAA school-by-the-sea from a coastal city down east. You know, the one coached by a grossly-overpaid former ASU head coach; the coach who hired another former ASU head coach as his assistant; and the one who also hired UNC-A's head coach as an assistant...

Well, said head coach at this coastal university, whose salary is more than the combined salaries of ALL of his assistant coaches, just happens to be an Asheville native. So, he somehow got the big idea that he "could go home again" and pick up an easy win over hapless UNC-A whose head coach he pirated away last spring.

I guess he never read any of Thomas Wolfe's work as he was growing up and attending public school in Asheville; or in those fine American Lit classes at UNC-CH! Too bad!

Chuck, I think everybody on this board can forgive you for this temporary lapse in "sportsmanship."
His biggest problem is that his wife has got him by the nads on the down-hill drag. I bet she's happy now, though; living at the beach, with enough money to choke a moose.

Asheville's been a good lower-mid for a while, on a shoe string budget. Nice new facility that is fun to watch BBall in. And this year, lost their best player (Bruce Hornsby's son) to transfer, had a bunch of injuries, new coach. And still putting together what looks to be a good year. Glad we don't play them. They're another example of a program that proves it can be done.

Eddie Biedenbach did a fine job there over the years. I was surprised to learn that his base salary as UNC-A's head coach was only $100,000 after 16 years on the job there. No wonder he left for UNC-W to be an assistant. At his age, 68, he's not going to get another HC position. His state retirement pension is going to be based on his salary during his four highest paid years in a row. He needed to build it as much as possible in the time he has left to work. It's a shame he felt he had to go out that way.

Wonder how Biedenbach and Fancher are getting along. They had a falling out while Fancher was at ASU and he flatly refused to play ASU again--ever. Part of it was that he wanted the job badly when we hired Fancher.

They stand 5-7 on the season after a four game winning streak including a win over Bluefield.

Chris, she'd better be putting some of that $$$ in the bank. As of today, her hubby is sporting a 41-67 record in the fourth year of a five year contract. That's good for a .380 winning percentage. His WP is going to get worse tomorrow when he takes his team to the DeanDome to bang heads with Roy's Boy.

Interestingly, as of tip-off time for tonight's game with Bluefield, Capel is 50-65...for a WP of .435. Both coaches are dangerously close to the hanging tree.

It's too bad his wife can't stand living in Boone, since it's the only place Buzz has ever been a successful coach.
