no doubt collage athletics are a dirty, cutthroat business, if you believe in Karma, this kid will recover, sign with someone else, play ODU, and make the game winning play that ruins ODU's season

Absolutely, and I wouldn't mind if it's us. I know we aren't looking to sign anyone anymore, but this kid has the potential to be a monster if he can recover from his injury properly.

Hope this story gets spread far and wide. I expect us to be competing with ODU for quite a few recruits in the coming years.

I think calling college athletics dirty is rather harsh. What happened to this kid is unfortunate but it isn't like he was cast out into the streets with nothing. He still has a scholarship offer to a very good school with an opportunity to earn a top notch education. So he won't get to play this fall but it's not a lost year of eligibility.

years ago, "the old ball coach" made some news, he wanted to give a schlorship to a high school running back but didn't have one to give, so, he solved this problem by taking one away from a, I believe a rising senior, it made news because the kid could no longer afford to go to collage, now the kid was a very good student, no problem with grades, and had never been in trouble during his time in collage, but without notice he lost his means to pay for his collage education . His only crime was he wasn't fast enough, strong enough, or agile enough to help the "old ball coach" win championships. When asked to explain the coach basically shrugged his shoulders and said basically, that's just part of collage football. Now, your telling me that's not cut throat?

I am assuming that you are referring to Bryce Sherman. Here is a quote from Sherman on the situation.

"Sherman confirmed that. He said he was aware that his scholarship was a year-to-year deal, not a four-year pact between school and student-athlete. He said players at South Carolina are also aware that they are competing for their roster spots."

So while I understand your reasoning, I don't see the practice referred in your post as "cut throat" if the young man knew all of the possibilities.

FWIW, I've heard "ol' ball coach used in reference to dozens of coaches in the past.

I feel bad for the kid but the article is pretty one sided. I'm sure ODU wouldn't comment but no mention of even trying to contact ODU. Any college has to take into account existing injuries and how that is going to affect what they pay for a player down the road. Just imagine if App signed a kid fresh off of knee surgery and he comes in and injures it again in fall camp and ends his career. I'd bet some of you guys would be upset that we wasted a scholarship on that player knowing there was better chance than others that he never play a down. If that's cut-throat then we're going to quickly run out of strong enough adjectives for all the worse things that happen to us in society everyday.

I'm pretty indifferent towards Spurrier, but he has two choices in matters such as these- Be known as a jerk, or do what he was paid to do, which is whatever it takes to win within the rules.

I don't think it was right to wait that long to tell the kid. I don't know all the circumstances but with the information supplied I think he got a raw deal. With that said it has nothing to do with our BB player. First of all no letter was signed but even further one wrong does not make the other right.
Coaches are paid the big bucks to do one thing and that is to win games. All the fluff about graduation rates, and honor, are just that, fluff. They are not there any longer to build men. Those days are over. They are there to win games. That is the only thing they are there for. Don't believe me? Let's say that we have a losing record, no more than 4 wins, for the next 5 years. Let's say that during that 5 years all players graduate with a 3.00 average and not one player gets in trouble. In year 6 will everyone on this board want the coach to be named Scott? With that in mind do we expect coaches to looking out for individual kids or for themselves?
Just so I am not misunderstood I think it stinks, but it is us the fans that have created this.

Is say that ODUs error is a direct benefit for App Charlotte and ECU across the state. This coach at Williams is angry.
