With UAB cutting football and probably getting kicked out of CUSA, could they end up in the Sun Belt?

It would make sense geographically and would be a "like minded" institution. They've been in the conference before. The Sun Belt already has 2 non-football schools. It would make the conference more stable as another school possibly leaves for CUSA. It would make bringing UMASS as a football-only member sting a little less too. Plus they would make our basketball better.

I would hope if we bring in UAB the conference SERIOUSLY considers bringing in a non-football member to be a travel partner for us. Someone like UNCG or Winthrop. It would really help our over-all costs.

I did read that UAB would have to add one mens' sport in order to meet the minimum Division I requirements.

There are a lot of people in Alabama who think the UofA BOT is going to kill the entire undergraduate program at UAB and make it a graduate/medical/research campus.

The SBC makes the most geographic sense, but I don't really see why the SBC would take them. If I were a conference, I'm not sure I'd want to deal with the uncertainty. I almost think they're banking on CUSA telling them they can't stay as an excuse to shut the whole program down.

It might not be a bad move since they have a good basketball program, but that wouldn't solve the travel partner issue for teams coming to Boone. Besides hoops what else is UAB good at?

If we did take UAB would we add a football only member at that point? If so would UMass, JMU, or Liberty be interested in that setup?

There is no doubt Carr's report just told the BOT what they wanted to hear. But if the BOT intends to do what a lot of people think, the changes are just beginning.

This whole thing should be a cautionary tale about what happens when one campus wields too much of the power in a state.

Nothing about UAB would make adding UMass for football-only more palatable IMO. UMass is nearly as bad a fit as Idaho.

In way too many cases these kinds of reports are written to support a predetermined conclusion. A conclusion that is supported by the entity that pays for it, and therefore not questioned.

regarding one institution carrying too much power, Alabama has not consolidated into one statewide system. The University of Alabama system is comprised of The U of A, UAB and UAH. Bama may carry the most political weight, but UAB the most economic weight, as the largest single employer in the state with a major medical school and research institution. UAB football was a stepchild with little support, apparently even with UAB circles, based on low attendance and living in the shadows of Alabama and Auburn

Scholarships will be lost, prospective students would choose different schools, the cheerleading team will probably be abolished. Over time the school will become simply a strong graduate school with very poor undergraduate life. The Sunbelt won't take them. No division 1 program will take them. Their athletic program is dead.

Well now I think you have gotten a little dramatic. There really are schools that have athletic departments and no football. There really are other sports.

You're using that as the basis for saying they will end up in D2? A Twitter post from an emotional player?

No one, especially you, knows what will happen to UAB athletics. Very few columnists have even ventured a guess could they end up in Division 2? Sure. Could they survive without football? UNCC did it for years (as have many, many) others. I've done plenty of reading on the subject and talked to 4 coworkers of mine who are from Alabama (including 2 from Birmingham). I've done plenty of research on the subject. I'm not prepared to write a eulogy for their athletic program until I see what CUSA does, and what they do with their athletic budget. If the pres makes good to not reduce it in any significant way, id say UAB could be a force in basket and baseball.

CUSA has already stated that they will not be allowed in the conference without a football team. It is a harsh reality but it's what's happening. I have seen loads of people saying that this is the end of their athletic department as we know it. I would like to discuss it further and find more on it but I am sadly studying for finals.

Actually CUSA has said publicly that they don't agree with it and they are going to meet to discuss it. Yes, their bylaws say that you must sponsor football, so they will most likely have to leave, but it hasn't been decided yet.

There is a vast, vast difference is saying something is dead (like an entire athletic program), and saying things are going to change. Dead equals no more sports. You've already backed away from that statement by saying D2 (which could be considered close to death for a former CUSA program). Big change is more likely, but not out and out death.

Two new articles on the fate of UAB's athletic program. Note: The headline on the first story is misleading. I can't find any place in the story that says a vote will take place, only a re-evaluation.
