Louisville Player Dismissed for Text Message

A
female acquaintance of Louisville basketball player Chris Jones invaded his residence and trashed his room. Jones responded with a text message that simply stated "[I'm going to] smack [the f***] out of you" and was released from the team.
This power dynamic is getting scary and out of hand. What do you even tell your college-aged son any more? It reminds me of the Salem Witch Trials.

You tell your kid, boy or girl, that all violence is wrong. His message was threat and designed to instill fear whether he acted on it or not.

You raise 'em to be respectful of others at all times; and to manage their emotions in a civil manner. Jones was a ticking time bomb. He's a walking-running emotional explosion ready for meltdown at any moment. He had a looong list of prior incidents in JuCo and at UL and multiple chances to get help. This incident was just the straw that finally broke the camel's back.

Well obviously it's a mistake to threaten, and that's an important consideration given the popularity of the domestic violence issue (I say popularity because the rates of DV are actually at all-time lows). But the power imbalance in these college contexts, with regards to gender, is unacceptable. These are policies, not individual behaviors, which is why it's much more concerning to me than this particular kid's overreaction.
He made "mistake," I guess. Ruining his life (which is what being dismissed from the team has ultimately done) is inappropriate. It's obviously a PR move in the wake of the all the exaggerated hysteria about violence against women.
In the real world, breaking and entering and vandalism carry stiffer penalties than communicating threats. But this is in the context of the media and a college campus, the two of which have made a living lately fabricating rape statistics, perpetuating all-out hoaxes (see UVA, Duke lacrosse), and otherwise criminalizing 18 to 22-year-old malehood.
Scary, scary time to be or love someone of that age with the misfortune of being born with a Y chromosome.

No one is immune from false accusations but if you attempt to conduct yourself in a way that is above board you increase the odds of avoiding such troubles. My guess is that incident was something that was building to this point. If I recall he was suspended for a game earlier this season. I grow a bit weary of men complaining about how they are treated in today's society.

Hap is right. This young man had already been suspended once this year and was allowed to return to the team.

I hope something happens to the female that invaded and trashed the room, but that does not excuse his threatening text. I have not idea what started all of this between the two of them, but there are better ways of handling this than what he did.

Well that's fair enough then (as far as his dismissal). I didn't know about his past offenses.

There is just plain right and wrong and the university did the right thing.
Now let's look at it through the eyes of this litigious society that has been created. They do nothing and then he acts on his threat. Please play defense attorney for the university.

You tell him that a woman with the same job/degree will still earn much less during her lifetime (among other "power dynamics" in action) and then tell him any of his perceived injustices make him look like a whiner when that fact is pointed out.

Or I can leave the poor kid be and dispute the "fact" with actual data.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB100014240 ... 2909957472
After accounting for occupation and marital status, the gender pay gap virtually disappears.
I might also mention that since 2010, women have surpassed men in payrolls (
http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/ ... olls/?_r=0).
There is also a MUCH better unemployment rate among women than men; they're jailed at 1/10th the rate of men; and they're more likely to enjoy the privilege of higher education than men.
The narrative really disappears when you fact check Buzzfeed.

Oh, woe is men.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/gender-wage ... ws-impact/
"Among full-time workers, women earn 18 percent less a week than men. Female CEOs make 20 percent less.
In the legal profession, women make 43 percent less than their male counterparts."
"A year after graduation, men are already earning 7 percent more than women, according to a study by the American Association of University Women. And once the salary is set, that gap widens over time."
Those numbers you linked are far from "proof". Especially when you have to log in to read it.

I'd hate to immediately stoop to addressing biases, but wouldn't something like the Wall Street Journal and empirical government data cited by a NYT Economist trump American Association of University Women in this regard? Good grief, it's their job to support the "patriarchy" narrative.

I think his college has provided him with some excellent life lessons. Hopefully he learns that "Actions have Consequences". I might also remind some that a college scholarship is a valuable asset, whether it is an athletic or academic scholarship, that comes with responsibilities attached in order to continue to retain that scholarship. Personal Conduct guidelines should be more than reasonable.

The data you posted says that it takes into account "marital status and occupation". That sounds like the definition of comparing apples to oranges. I posted data that compares apples to apples and yet you say it's from the despicable feminist plot to take over the world. You're the only one with the masculine common sense to save our sons Gonzo! Please start a masculist lobbyist organization once you're out of school.

I think you've got it backwards. Taking marital status and occupation into account
is what enables us compares apples to apples. Only then are we comparing someone with a penis doing X for Y amount of money to someone without a penis doing X for Y amount of money.
Your data, conceived by an organization devoted to perpetuating these myths, neglects
any and every mitigating factor that affects pay rate within ANY population sample.
Maybe one day I'll write for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times Economics blog or some other masculine lobbyist organization you have so characterized.

I'll also address the straw man:
I've never come at this with a "woe is men," "men are being oppressed" attitude or hypothesis. I've pointed out a growing social trend in gender power differentials in the NARROW context of college-aged Americans, largely perpetrated by the media; a vocal minority by means of the media; and campuses and institutions themselves with reactionary, PR hysteria in the wake of the former.
I've also made attempts, with VERY RELIABLE DATA, to dispel the growing myth of the "patriarchy."

The data you described is exactly what I posted. Female CEOs make less than male CEOs and so on down the line when comparing the same occupations. What does one's marital status have to do with anything?
My argument wasn't a "straw man" a few posts ago when you tried to refute it with "There is also a MUCH better unemployment rate among women than men; they're jailed at 1/10th the rate of men; and they're more likely to enjoy the privilege of higher education than men."

Again, college aged men. That is a small percentage of men.
I could sit here and only list examples from Appalachian State University to prove my point in that regard.
