Interesting, big name for sure but he has no experience with the college game or as a head coach in general

This has all the markings of a Capel-esk, program-destroying hire.

It has my full support.

I know I'm biased, but on paper I really don't think it is as good of a hire as we made last spring.

I have no opinion on whether it's a good hire. Resume doesn't have much in common with Capel's at all though, other than lacking head coaching experience.

A high level assistant becoming a head coach for the first time was the basis of my comparison. Although the ACC isn't the NBA. The NBA doesn't recruit high school kids.

I might cyber squat and go ahead and buy FirePrice.com. Nothing will be good enough for those cry babies in Harrisburg anyway.

Your mistake there - and this might be a first - is in giving Capel too much credit. He was never a high-level assistant. Unless you consider one year on the end of App's bench to be high-level.

I thought he was an assistant at UNC before App.

Wow that really was the shittiest hire of all time.

in the short term, it would be a good hire, his name alone would excite the 49er alumi base, and would mean more people attending games, and more donations, but in the long term no one has a clue if he can recruit and coach collage kids, its definitely a gamble if they hire him.

But hey, he listened to Jay-Z just like the players did.

This is in no way similar to the Capel situation.

Price has one year as an assistant at Georgia Tech (though it was a long time ago). He has also been a successful high school coach and a player development coach for multiple NBA teams. And he has one year as an assistant in Charlotte. Add that to a long and notable NBA career, and I think you've got a decent candidate. He can try to steal some big name players with a pitch about getting players ready for the NBA. And presumably he knows something about player development. I can see why this might work really well.

Some of our fans were wanting LaVelle Moton for basically the same reason.

Moton has HC experience of course, so not exactly the same as Capel, but his heavy reliance on JUCOs at NC Central did not impress me as much as his record.

As for Price, I'm excited in some ways, concerned in others. If he surrounds himself with a good group of assistants, I'll feel really good about it.

And in the spirit of being a good guest, I like what Fox is doing on the mountain. I think he'll have you guys competing for SBC titles very soon.

I would have wanted Moton too if I were you. Spectacular job at NCCU. I expect he'll be a home run hire for somebody soon.

Any comparison of him to Capel is way off base.

You ever seen his roster? He literally has 3 guys on the roster (1 is a walkon) that didn't transfer from another school or go to a junior college. One of those guys is from Europe, so he has 1 scholarship player from HS on his entire roster.

Doesn't inspire confidence in his recruiting ability to me. That's no way to build a D1 program. You can see short term success like that (see MT's domination of the SBC 2 years ago), but it is extremely difficult to maintain success when your roster is experiencing huge turnover every year.

No joke, one of the reasons Cobb hired Capel was because he connected with the players over Jay-Z's music. That and "life experiences". All over one weekend.

Moton is like Ron Hunter is many ways. Built a solid team off transfers, plus Hunter had his son who is an NBA draft pick as a junior.

A lot of people are liking Price because of how he was as a player. That's not how it works.

He would be a flashy hire, but building a team that'll probably struggle next season will test his dedication.

And yes, a big part of Price's success (if he's the guy) would be his staff. He would need a solid top assistant who knows the college game. And stay away from Jason Allison. You don't want him, he's terrible. ;)

Wow, that's terrible.

Also, to clarify my earlier comments, I do think Moton is a good coach. Certainly not on the level of Capel by any means. His recruiting just concerns me. I doubt NCCU is an easy place to recruit to, but if he struggles to recruit good talent, it would be a disaster. CUSA isn't a great conference, but it is considerably better than the MEAC. He would have to step up his game. Major did well recruiting, but was a terrible coach. I'm afraid Moton (and Price for that matter) may be the exact opposite leaving our dumpster fire still burning.

I'll get excited about Price if I like the assistant coaching hires.

Everyone has to step up their game when they move to a bigger school. Fortunately, the extra resources and bigger name make it a lot easier to step up your game.

When Levelle Moton took over NCCU they were transitioning from D2. His record in the transition year was 15-15. First year in the MEAC was 17-15 (10-6). Second year was 22-9 (15-1). Third year was 28-6 (15-1), and they made the NCAA torunament. This year they are 25-8 (16-0), and made the NIT.

Dude has absolutely taken a team transitioning from D2 and absolutely owned the MEAC. They are 46-2 in conference over the last 3 years!!!! If he did that by taking tons of transfers then that only proves one thing: Moton is picking the right transfers.

The downside to taking transfers is obvious. They aren't around long, so you don't have much time to develop them and indoctrinate them into your program. But there is an upside: you can outsource the development to someone else, and pick up players who are ready to contribute right away. That can be a good move at a low-major, its a bit less risky than taking a chance on a borderline D1 player. And if you miss on a transfer, at least you know they are leaving soon. You've got a bigger dilema when you miss on a high school player - do you push them out of the program?

Judy is under a ton of pressure to "get this one right" after blowing the previous hire (and letting Greg Marshall get away). She appears to have opted for a quick hire that may arouse at least some initial excitement due to name recognition (and yet not break the bank because of his lack of head coaching experience). Most everyone would agree, if/when Price has his first decent season in a weak (suddenly one-bid) CUSA, Georgia Tech will come calling and there will be rubber burned down I-85 South. Instead of investing the time and energy into finding a more permanent coach, Judy knows fans and media will give Price at least a couple years before calling for heads. This way, she avoids a lengthy, potentially embarrassing search, and buys some time until she can ride off into the sunset.

Funny, except I don't remember Happy getting the best of that fight.

Of course, he did end up with Virginia Venit, or was it Veronica Vaughan, in the end.

I think your right about Tech being Prices ultimate destination, he needs some collage experience to justify GT hiring him, and GT really can't afford to fire another coach, pay him the remainder of his contract, plus Price's contract. In a perfect world for GT/Price he proves to be an excellent coach, Tech lets the current contract for the existing coach play out, and he heads for Atlanta. If he stays more than 4 years at Charlotte and rebuilds the program than it would be a great hire by Judy, however, not sure the odds are good he stays more than a couple of years, especially if Tech wants him.
