Good for them. They're going to have to spend some SERIOUS money on expansion to be ready for that many Heels fans.
Now, Doug Gillan, go get us NC State.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
Is it really a surprise? The bigger NC ACC schools love being able to get some exposure in the Tidewater area to help with recruiting against Va Tech and UVA. Playing us doesn't do anything for them. We're not a recruiting hotspot. If they win against us they were supposed to and it makes no difference. And if they lose they'll have a hard time living it down. No real upside in their minds. If DG is able to get us a series with UNC or State or even Duke, as long as they continue winning, then he should get the miracle worker title.

They travel to ECU which isn't a recruiting hotbed.
I wouldn't be surprised if they started playing ECU less in favor of a game with us. I could see a scenario that they rotate series with App, ECU, and UNCC down the line instead of playing ECU so much.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
ECU may not be a hotbed but there are more high schools in that region that produce more D-1 athletes than up here and they recruit eastern NC more than the NW part of NC. But perception is still a large part of all this and, like it or not, App is still living under the "smaller school" banner. That will change with time but a lot of people working on the recruiting sites are hearing things like that from HS coaches and families. We talk about it often. I agree with you that, down the line, we'll see things change and DG is working on it but we have some hurdles to overcome.Saint3333 wrote:They travel to ECU which isn't a recruiting hotbed.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
Except UNC doesn't play ECU for "access" to the DH conleys, JH Roses, South Centrals or North Pitts of the world, they're Carolina all the kids are already pretty informed about UNC at this point in their lives. They play ECU because through legislation they are forced too, as we all know. I also wouldn't say UNC is playing ODU strictly for recruiting purposes, with Big 10s recent change of no longer playing FCS schools other conferences are going to have to follow suit. G5 will be the new opponents added to the schedule and ODU is setting the precedent of getting a H&H instead of a 1-and-done money game. Personally I couldn't care less if we play Carolina or not, I'd rather play ECU and if I'm DG I use this UNC-ODU series as a leverage point.

EDIT: Actually, there is no bill passed forcing NC State and ECU to play. It was drawn up in the state legislature, but it was withdrawn because a compromise was reached.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
Never said "access". Just simply stated there are more D1 type kids available in the eastern part of the state than in the NW part. I am also aware of the legislation and that kids in NC and surrounding states know who UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake, and even ECU are.
One of these days I will learn.

ODU will be able to schedule H&H with many, many schools that will never consider coming to Boone. It is all location and exposure to potential recruits. That is also what we look at as far as where we wish to go play money games; where we see prospective recruits.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
Few interesting points here:
- Moose is spot-on about big schools being willing to travel to ODU largely because of recruiting. There was an article a few months back in which their AD was very open about that being a big part of the appeal, and they're using it to their advantage. No debating that.
- Other than ECU, this is the first G5 team that UNC will play on the road in... I don't know how long. They just don't do it. So I wouldn't guess this will be the start of a new trend. Or if it is, it will involve them traveling to other areas they want to recruit. (read: not Boone)
- It is my understanding that ODU does want to expand their stadium. But it's not to fill it for the occasional P5 opponent - it's because they're selling out every game right now. There's no imperative for G5 schools to make sure everybody who wants a ticket for the one big-name game per year gets one. That seems to be a common misconception when discussing expansion. On the contrary, creating a supply shortage might be a good way to sell season tickets and increase booster donations.
- Finally, while it's clear that App and ODU aren't exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, they are one of many G5s that have been able to schedule home-and-homes with P5 teams. There is plenty of reason to believe that App can do the same without a stadium expansion that may or may not be warranted by demand (not the least of which is that we've already done so).

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
I actually think Gillin might have more luck scheduling out-of-state P5s than UNC or State, for the "no-win" reasoning that Moose mentioned. There are plenty of P5 teams who don't draw huge crowds at home and don't travel that well who I think might consider coming to Boone. Or at least, I'd want to call and try to convince them.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
Spot on T. The bill was drafted in 95' and a roll call was conducted that showed it would pass if brought to the floor. UNC and State didn't want to be locked in legally so they went the compromise route.T-Dog wrote:EDIT: Actually, there is no bill passed forcing NC State and ECU to play. Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
ODU is getting almost too big for their britches, so to speak. May be moving way, way too fast for their resources. It's great to set the bar high; but one's goals have to be realistic. Methinks ODU HC Bobby Wilder is on a serious ego trip; but he doesn't have to write the checks and keep the accounts in the black.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
UNC is playing ODU for two reasons: "C-USA" and exposure in the DC metro market.
We have to stop looking at it as "they got that game scheduled first, why weren't we good enough to get it
?" It's not about that. Remember, our OOC schedule is completely set for 2016 and 2017. We have one opening is 2018. We're looking for a school that has the same unscheduled date we do and that's a very narrow window. For all we know we're working on a kick ass home and home for 2018/19.
Pump the breaks and quit worrying about it.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
**SIDE NOTE - Wake Forest is a Power 5 team that, while down at the moment, has been very good in the recent past. UNC is coming off some pretty severe academic violations so (while big) they're not exactly what they were 5 years ago either.EastHallApp wrote:Few interesting points here:

I'd like to see us going after H&H's with Vandy, Duke, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers. These are winnable P5 games that would get us great exposure in fertile recruiting areas. If we sneak away with a few wins there - EXCELLENT.

"CUSA" has nothing to do with them getting those games.
The perception between the SBC and CUSA to P5 programs is the same.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
Wake has won an ACC Football Championship more recently than the rest of Tobacco Road and they're coming to Boone in two years.
The scheduling of this game is all about recruiting. That's why NC State is also going to ODU and Troy. Unfortunately Boone is not a recruiting hotbed.
Boise isn't a recruiting hotbed but they've hosted P5 teams. Just gotta win.

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
ODU stadium capacity - 20,068. Man, us Mountaineers better step up and increase the attendance of our 22k seat stadium because we will never get big P5 games in boone because our stadium us too small.
I am tired of this "we can't" attitude on the mountain and within our fanbase and constant excuses of what we can't do this or that. We CAN get P5's to Boone and will - regardless of stadium capacity. The ODU games against UNc and NCSU are proof.
In the meantime it is time for us, the fans to step up, show up and support our team. When that happens week after week maybe expansion will occur. But until that happens, we have no business expanding but that shouldn't stop us from recruiting/seeking these marquee P5 home and homes. Time for us, the fans, to put our $'s and time where our mouth is by attending all home games in force. As mentioned in other threads its embarassing the number of tickets sold to date within a month of kickoff.
...off soapbox

Re: ODU signs H&H w another NC ACC program
How many regular season games in the last 10 years have sold over capacity?
Who says we aren't putting our $$$ where our mouths are?
How many other schools can claim this level of support?
It's time to expand.
