Was just posting how the coaches getting fired at various schools hurts their recruiting and their programs. This is even worse. If those allegations are found to be true then you're right. Big Trouble ahead for UL-L.

On a scale of 0 to UNC-CH, how bad is this?

Probably slightly less than UNC-CH in that ULL didn't create a phony department and give out fake degrees. They falsified ACT scores for multiple recruits to get them in school and gave cash payments to recruits. It's bad.

You should probably measure it on a scale of 0 to SMU. UNC-CHeat is Teflon.

ULL in trouble?

This could open up the New Orleans bowl for another SBC member.

Scot Sloan was talking with us at Football 201 about the kind of athletes they recruit for football and how the academic piece is so important. They don't want to recruit a kid who can't make it academically at App. He also stressed that App's academic standing has increased rather dramatically in the last 10 years.

That's not to say that our football players are all geniuses. It is to say that our recruiting takes into account the classroom abilities of the players.

I like to think that the behavior we see publicly from our coaches is an indication of their overall integrity. I'm certain that having Jonathan Reeder as our compliance guru in residence is a positive thing.

I hate to hear NCAA crashing sounds on any program and hope ULL comes out of this mess ok, though it sounds pretty bad.

Never thought of ULL as the "Academic Hot Spot"... It is LA.. not exactly a academic hot bed in our country.... which sort of underscores "How Stupid Can You Be".... but then raises how far NC has fallen with teachers.. to #50 in this country... So, don't know if I need to be so smug... Alas.. they are still better than UNC in this matter... Oh the irony....

On the other hand, in the big scheme of things, nobody that matters cares about the Ragin' Cajuns, so the NCAA will probably nail them to a cross like they did that other small school several months back (whom's name I forgot). The NCAA doesn't seem to mind doling out punishment as long as it doesn't hurt their viewership and bottom line. Doing anything to ULL will be just a blip outside of those following the Sun Belt.

ULL is not denying the ACT story, but is fighting the payment story.

They're going to vacate their 2011 season and with other self-punishment things (scholarship, visit and off-campus recruiting reductions), they think the NCAA won't go after them any further. The rogue assistant was just that. However, the NCAA still considers the head coach as someone who should know what's going on with his assistants, so Hud will be guilty by association.

SMU just had this type of situation with their basketball team and despite firing everyone involved and doing similar self-punishment, the NCAA still hammered them.

While the overall scope sounds like it's smaller than UNC, the big difference is that at UNC, no athletic department personnel are accused of violations relating to the academic scandal. When you have a coach accused of direct involvement in altering test scores and paying players, that's a big problem. Obviously they're hoping that they'll get of relatively easy because they've fired him.

I wonder when they actually finalized their response to the NOA, and specifically the self-imposed penalties. I have a hunch that if they were making that call right now, seeing how their season has started, they might go ahead and take that postseason ban for 2015.

ULL considered a post-season ban for 2015 but decided otherwise according to their beat writer.

Penn State and USC would take issue with this.

Saw that - what I meant was, I wonder if they made that decision before, say, the Akron loss.

They should still be able to make seven wins this year. I think ULM, GSU, NMSU, and Troy range from likely wins to gimmes and they're definitely capable of beating stAte, USA, and us even if those games are on the road. And seven wins makes them a lock for New Orleans.
