Problems at UT-K

A federal lawsuit has been filed against 5 current and former players including some football players. Former UT-K WR transferred to UT-C following two altercations in which he was allegedly jumped by teammates for helping a rape victim. Looks like the Chancellor, AD and head coach are accused of failing to address the "hostile sexual environment". Could Rocky Top be in the market for a new head coach this offseason?

Yea it's crazy what's happening, especially given all the scrutiny in the handling of violence and sexual misconduct against women over the past couple of years. Add on to the fact that a player tried to step up and do what was right and got jumped by his teammates with rumors that some coaches were present and didn't intervene.

I doubt they'd can Butch, especially after his first 3 recruiting classes in Knoxville but...and a big but at that...should they have to pull the plug amid scandal then who better to enter on short notice and bring instant reputation (save what I believe is an ill-fated attempt to pin the man on the whole HGH deal) than Peyton Manning. I know he has repeatedly said he isn't too interested in coaching (especially being a HC), would want to take some time off, etc. but man...he'd be about as good as it gets from day one. It'd be like the second coming of Johnny Majors in Rocky Top land. It would be akin to calling Roy home to Carolina at a point when Carolina Basketball really needed him.

Bringing Peyton into arguably one of the toughest conferences as a first year coach fresh out of the NFL would be a bad decision in my opinion. Roy coached at a fairly successful Kansas team for 15 years before taking over. I know people in Knoxville love Manning, but that be one hell of a gamble for a program already showing more and more success on the field year after year.

Not all good players make good coaches.

What is UTK? Do you mean the Tennessee University?

Yes, and I enjoy calling them UT-K. Their fans hate it almost as much as we dislike Appy.

The real question is, what is "Tennessee University?" I know of a Tennessee
Tech University and a Tennessee
State University, but no Tennessee University!

Peyton is actually one of the players named in the lawsuit.
Yes, the lawsuit goes back 25 years to create an atmosphere of "sexual assault." And, Peyton was accused of sexually assaulting a trainer while at UT.
It also says that by playing "Lil Jon" at football games - they're promoting Rape Culture.
Also...
The plaintiffs claim that UT’s administrative hearing process, which is utilized by public universities across the state, is unfair because it provides students accused of sexual assault the right to attorneys and to confront their accusers through cross examination and an evidentiary hearing in front of an administrative law judge.
UT's hearing process is unfair because the accused has the right to an attorney and confronting your accuser through cross examination... just like the Constitution says.
App was in a similar place a few years ago.
And, the bottom line is that university conduct hearings aren't the place to try cases as serious as rape and sexual assault. These should be handled in the courts where they have subpoena power, perjury statutes, etc.

The Obama Justice Department has a dog in this date rape fight on the college campus. A program has been handed down to help IHEs bring the situation under control...

A school should have everything to do with trying to prevent the culture. It should have nothing to do with it once a rape has occurred. It is a criminal matter and should be immediately turned over to the police. At that point the school needs to get back to educating students.

Bringing in Manning to become HC of football at UT-K would be somewhat akin to bringing in Capel to be the HC of ASU Basketball. Manning wouldn't know where to start (just like Capel was totally overwhelmed by the workload and complexity). Just like with Capel (hiring the former HC at GWU to do the real work), UT-K would have to hire a former P5 HC as the lead assistant or associate head coach to do all of the necessary leg-work--with Manning being the back-slapping good 'ol boy to meet and greet UT-Ks big donors and the parents of recruits.
On the football field and doing game strategy work, Manning might keep his head above water until his first clashes with Alabama, Auburn and Clemson.

Sorry 66, I've got to disagree. Peyton would kill it as an OC in college football. He could recruit any QB any the country as well as WRs, etc. He's been calling plays for years. And most importantly an unparalleled work ethic.

You know it's the offseason when we're debating whether a guy who's never been a coach would be a good choice to coach at a program that doesn't have an opening.

I'm not saying that I disagree with you on the fact that it would be a stretch to throw Peyton in the SEC fire as a HC...it would be. But, and this is a big but, to compare Peyton Manning in ANY way to Jason Capel is laughable. Truly funny stuff. I can't imagine very many questioning Peyton's intellect whereas we all know that Capel went to UNCheat soooooo. In all seriousness, Peyton would find it a tough climb (though I think he has the fortitude to handle it if given the time and right staff) at first but I imagine the resemblances to the Capel debacle would be very few. The reality is Capel only stumbled into the HC job because of 4 things, in no particular order: 1.) Right place, right time after Fuzz busted to the coast, 2.) Cost - he came cheap, 3.) Baby blue in his background gave him instant "cred" as "knowing something" about basketball...and his family experience certainly didn't hurt, and 4.) Diversity.

All I'm saying is that it's a w-i-d-e s-t-r-e-t-c-h for any humanoid to go from any non-coaching experience to head coach of a Division I, Power 5 school in one leap. It's almost suicidal. It's begging to be fired early.
I'm well-aware of Manning's career success. Becoming an OC, recruiting and instructing QB prospects and calling plays is one thing; becoming the big cheese HC with ALL of the responsibilities is a totally different matter. Apples and grenades.
Oh, and please re-read my post. I began by saying that it was
somewhat akin...meaning a similar idea for filling a position. Nowhere did I imply that Manning and Capel are in any way co-equals. I'm not nuts...not yet, anyway!

IF Peyton Manning wanted to get into coaching - and doing so would be an unusual career path for a player of his stature - I'm not sure why anyone assumes it would be in college anyway.
