Coastal to Omaha

Unread post by T-Dog » Sun Jun 12, 2016 11:48 pm

The Chants just salvaged a disaster top ninth with a walk-off in the bottom ninth to get the two-game sweep at LSU to punch their first-ever ticket to Omaha and the College World Series.

Coastal coach Gary Gilmore was a senior (Class of 76) at Franklin County High School (VA) my first year as a teacher there. He was a member of the baseball team that played in the first (and to date, only) trip to the state championship game for FCHS. It would be great for the Belt (though technically still a Big South squad) and Rocky Mount for CCU to win it all.

Coastal beat #1 Florida in the opening round of the College World Series 2-1. They'll face TCU on Tuesday with the winner one win away from the championship series.

GIlmore was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Coach of the Year a couple of days ago.

Going to be in Omaha on business Tuesday & Wed, so I just bought a CWS ticket to cheer on Coastal Tuesday night! Great way to spend a per diem. :)

I went to the CWS two years ago. Had a blast. Very nice scenery if you know what I mean.

As much as I'm pulling for The Chants, I can't say that I'm not jealous of them. We are at a pivotal point in our baseball program where we have the opportunity to bring in a coach that will turn our program around and get us to Omaha. We need to bring in someone that is a proven winner as a head coach. I think we're setting ourselves up for mediocrity bringing in someone that we "think" could be a good head coach (i.e. Sammy Esposito). We need to take the same route we did with Pollard, hire a D2 head coach that is a proven winner, that is ready to make the jump to the D1 level.

We stand a better of getting a talented snow skier such recognition as DJ achieved with his golf game yesterday. Congrats to DJ and Coastal!
