Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
kinda sucks for one of our arch-rivals. What were they supposed to do?
"The Sun Belt Conference announced Friday it fined Marshall $100,000 for opting out of the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl last month even though the Thundering Herd's roster had been depleted to 41 players after coach Charles Huff's exit to Southern Miss and as many as 36 players entering the transfer portal."

Re: Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
They should have went and played. Bunch of those kids would probsbly have wanted to play. I get that a good portion of the team hit the portal and they lost a coach.... At first I thought they made the right choice but looking back on it they could have strung something together. If they absolutely couldn't I think the Sunbelt would have waived the fine they just imposed. But it's Marshall and I don't really care. Lol

Re: Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
So with COVID, teams had to cancel if they didn’t have enough depth at certain positions. Wouldn’t the same logic apply to the transfer portal? You’d think so… but that would require the NCAA to actually make sense..

Well, it would make more sense if it was the NCAA. Unfortunately it is the Sun Belt and you think they would have a better handle on things.

Re: Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
I get the fine is coming from the Belt, but here’s the kicker: during COVID, the NCAA made a whole rule about canceling games if teams didn’t have enough depth because of “player safety.”
Now? If a team doesn’t have enough depth because everyone got poached, suddenly player safety isn’t a big deal anymore. Guess it only matters if there’s a pandemic, not a transfer portal pandemic that makes more money for the big teams/conferences.

That’s like comparing apples and pizza. Marshall didn’t have enough players bcuz they didn’t extend a coach a contract who just won the conference title. Completely self-inflicted wound by Marshall.704App wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:42 pmI get the fine is coming from the Belt, but here’s the kicker: during COVID, the NCAA made a whole rule about canceling games if teams didn’t have enough depth because of “player safety.”

Marshall could’ve gotten all kinds of press if the remaining coaches had open tryouts for guys to play in the bowl game. Instead they just cancelled and lost revenue for the team and conference.

Re: Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
If they’d had turned down the invitation to the bowl game there would have been no fine. Am I correct in that? But then the developments (self-inflected, as has been said) occurred that introduced conditions which few wanted to play or coach under? Correct?
Again, I hope they don’t pay the fine. What would be the repercussions? Kick ‘em out? No way that’d happen. I know there are conference rules but sometimes a school has the right to make its own decisions under certain circumstances.

Was it truly "self-inflicted". Huff to Southern Miss was being reported midway through the season. Maybe, he came to the table with obscene demands.Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 5:14 pmIf they’d had turned down the invitation to the bowl game there would have been no fine. Fix the portal window (which may now go away based on the Wisconsin CB who is transferring without entering the portal) and this doesn't happen.

Most of what happened during COVID made no sense. lol704App wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:42 pmI get the fine is coming from the Belt, but here’s the kicker: during COVID, the NCAA made a whole rule about canceling games if teams didn’t have enough depth because of “player safety.”

Re: Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
I suspect, the fine is partially making up for the lost revenue, but more importantly to discourage the member schools from getting themselves in that situation. If this type of penalty was in the league bylaws, which Marshall willingly signed up for, then I have no sympathy for them. They cost the conference (and us) through the revenue sharing, so they should pay. Plus, as someone said, it's Marshall...so it doesn't bother me at all...

As long as you won't be mad if it happens to us. If they can do it to Marshall then they can do it to App State as well.Rick83 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 7:59 amI suspect, the fine is partially making up for the lost revenue, but more importantly to discourage the member schools from getting themselves in that situation. If App ever ducks out of a bowl game, my opinion won’t matter anymore because I won’t be supporting them anymore. For decades our credos have been “Today I Give My ALL…” and “anytime, anyone, anywhere.” If we quit on both of those, then I quit too.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 12:06 pmAs long as you won't be mad if it happens to us. Re: Marshall fined for skipping bowl game
Just making sure. I applaud your consistency! If the portal dates are indeed moved and hold up challenges it should stop that from happening. I was disappointed the Sun Belt fined them. I expected the NCAAA to do it.MrCraig wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 12:57 pmIf App ever ducks out of a bowl game, my opinion won’t matter anymore because I won’t be supporting them anymore.
