Out of 130 schools in FBS, we rank 121. We need to keep this in mind when we have our dreams of what we want to see happen in our athletic program.

What are we doing with our $22 M? That's a nice chunk of change. And why did Coastal get more than us?

I am not an insider but I would wager we are paying bills with it and there's little if any left over when that's done.

Fund the entire Athletic dept. and the 18 varsity sports we sponsor. Sorry, that is not alot of money at all. Not what Coastal got but what they earned. Not to mention they played on TV for a Beisbol natty!

$6M in scholarships, $5M+ in salaries for coaches and support staff of 18 sports. An even larger chuck to debt servicing for facilities. Then travel and recruiting budgets. Our ROI is pretty good compared to others.

It's my opinion that accurate comparisons and accurate rankings are almost impossible to calculate because there's no accounting standard from state to state and from public to private institutions. The data from that link, however, is sobering and reinforces what we already know. We're always (in our lifetimes, anyway) going to be in an ongoing struggle to compete with huge land-grant, scientific research universities and private universities with enormous endowments.
And to repeat my caution about making apples to oranges comparisons, it's still interesting to do a little basic arithmetic and compare the data from Jerry's most recent post with one he posted last April showing "reported" revenue data from 2015. Reality creeps in even when the data is probably unreliable.

I know it's just semantics to you and me, but our athletic dept. counts T & F as four sports giving us a total of 20. (M & W indoor and outdoor T & F have independent budgets.)

So does this figure include the portion of student fees?

I'm sure there is a breakdown somewhere:
Yosef donations
Student fees
Ticket sales
Corporate sponsorships
Tv revenue
Misc.

The breakdown is available. I don't recall the exact figures, but roughly speaking student fees account for nearly 60% of revenues, ticket sales are a distant second at about 25%, donations and sponsorships are about 10%. Conf and TV revenues make up a small amount of revenue. Some things to consider is that G5 programs rely on student fees, and to a lesser extent ticket sales. We do pretty well on ticket sales, but we are constrained by our student enrollment numbers. Lots of G5 programs have many more students to tax, some 2-3 times more. Also, comparing the breakdown between G5 and P5 programs highlights the different realities that each lives in. P5 programs don't have the huge operating deficits that we and other G5 have, so they don't rely on student fees to subsidize their programs. They cover their expenses with huge TV dollars. They don't even need the ticket sales that G5 programs need. It's a different reality, and G5 programs can't sustain themselves using the P5 business model.

Unfortunately we will have to temper expectations to keep coaches, improve programs and facilities as long as we are down the list in revenue. We are going to need some very big benefactors and I wonder if we have an "elephant hunting" crew dedicated to visiting the big donors like Jerry Richardson and others? Reminds me of the benefactor that I cant remember who gave significant money to a smaller school rather that his alma mater harvard saying " They have enough money already"

The one that really pops out to me is GA ST I went to one game down there and you could throw hand grenades in there and not hurt anyone.

That is pretty sad in itself.

We can only cast so many stones at 55-60%.

Oh I totally agree. I think you know how I feel about student fees.
