JONESBORO, Ark. (9/6/17) – Arkansas State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir has issued the following statement regarding the Red Wolves’ home football game versus Miami that was previously scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 9.
“Having lived in Palm Beach County for seven years, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in South Florida as they prepare for Hurricane Irma.
Over the past 24 hours I had numerous exchanges with University of Miami Athletics Director Blake James, offering to make additional accommodations for his players and program to assist them with their trip to Memphis and Jonesboro. This morning I spoke with Blake (James), who informed me their team will not be making the trip to Jonesboro to play in our game this Saturday.
I appreciate the Sun Belt Conference office, Commissioner Karl Benson and ESPN’s work to give us the option to move the game and broadcast to Friday night, which gave the University of Miami an alternative. Ultimately, the Miami administration made the decision not to travel.
We are currently working through all the variables associated with the game not being played. We will keep the fan base and media updated as we know more.”

Miami at stAte cancelled
A-State's biggest home game in a few years is not happening as Mark Richt and the Canes refused to travel to the game due to Hurricane Irma.

I assume there is buyout clause just as if either wanted to cancel for a bigger opportunity. Or schedule for later date.

Another blow to the conference. Aside from 2 P5's on our schedule, and of course Wake at home, the schedule is unfortunately Crap. Certainly no ones fault with the exception Of the sunbelt. It's been pretty clear for some time now who the cream of the crop in the conference is. I wish the conf would have stepped in and reshuffled the schedule with the departure of Idaho and NMSU. Giving us at least 1 game with Troy/Arky. Missed opportunity for the conference I'm afraid.

Looks like Irma may be heading toward Savannah as well, could affect our game too.

This is absolutely the right call. I know we'd all be pissed if this had happened to us last year, but this is a storm that's going to ruin lives. One of the largest ever recorded. In the grand scheme of things football is just a game, sucks for stAte but you can't put these kids at risk.

Not arguing against this because there is no argument, but the game was in Jonesboro and would get them out of harms way. Let's check in on Miami and see if they relocate (out of harms way) and practice all weekend for next week.MarxistMountaineer wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:39 pmThis is absolutely the right call. No worries there. Given another day or better, until any possible impact on SE GA compared to So. Florida means getting back shouldn't be an issue. Also, we are their $$$ game so they need the dollars...bad. They'll be in Boone Saturday.WataugaMan wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:22 pmLooks like Irma may be heading toward Savannah as well, could affect our game too.

Of course they would be out of harms' way Jonesboro. They did not want to play this game and they had an out. They used it. They would not be using the weather as an excuse if they were supposed to play at Notre Dame this weekend.

Logistical knowledge, emergency response experience, and overall intelligence aren't a strong suit in any forum threads I've read pertaining to this storm.

Re: Miami at stAte cancelled
It is just a game... and safety should always be the priority BUT if what I read is right and Miami doesn't have to buy out the game after refusing to try and reschedule when every other school around them are keeping their game commitments.... sounds like a cop out to me.....

Puerto Rico is already forecasting 4-6 months before the island has power. I think it's fair to be cautious.

Safety before football.
One does have to wonder if the other five Florida schools are getting this wrong by making arrangements to play their games.

Re: Miami at stAte cancelled
Another thing important to consider is that Miami traditionally recruits right in their back yard. I bet a significant portion of their team's homes are right there in the path where the hurricane is supposed to destroy. If you're a 20 year old kid, imagine playing a game knowing your home is currently getting destroyed while your family is left behind and you aren't there to help.
