June 2 would be a dumb time to announce. We can play for the FCS Championship in the 2013-2014 season even if we announced today. Why would anyone want to put off our transitional period an extra year? If we do not announce prior to June 1 this year we would be stuck in FCS an entire extra year. Would really hurt us.

I think it makes us ineligible for SOCON title, thus any playoff bid would be at large.

There is a lot of confusion regarding this. There is a date sometime between May 1st and June 1st in which a team can announce a move to FBS and remain playoff eligible. This is what ODU did last year. GA State announced in April and was deemed ineligible. ODU could not however win the CAA, this is a CAA specific rule which may or may not be the same for the SoCon.

If an invitation does come I would not expect it before May anyway. Anyone hoping for news before that will likely be disappointed.

Announcing now vs. May doesn't impact the timing. We would not want to increase scholarships to 74 until 2014 anyway as the prime recruiting period is through.

IF an invitation comes we'll play one more year in the playoffs, have a transition year at 74 scholarships in 2014 (mixed schedule of FCS and FBS teams) and then a full 85 and FBS schedule in 2015.

This is a carbon copy of what ODU has done. CUSA will allow ODU to be eligible for championships beginning 2015.

You are right there has been alot of confusion regarding this, In the case of Georgia State they came forth and announced they were going up to FBS and also submitted the paperwork to do so before the July 1st deadline, therefore eliminating them from potential playoffs and NC contention, in the case of ODU they announced they were going up to FBS but did not actually submit the paperwork until after the July 1st deadline, because of this admission of intent, the conference ruled they could not be conference champs but were eligible for playoff by an at large bid they essentially opted for a 2 year transition time period. I hope this clears everything up.

It's my understanding that when we announce we're joining a FBS conference has no bearing on whether we're playoff eligible or not. It's when we submit our paperwork to the NCAA that triggers our FCS-to-FBS transition period and results in being ineligible for the FCS playoffs.

As long as we do not submit the paperwork to the NCAA until after the cut-off date (June 1st?) then we'll be eligible for the FCS playoffs, however, we put off our 2yr transition period for another year - see ODU. (i.e. bowl eligible in 2015)

If we submit the paperwork prior to the cutoff date we'll begin our 2yr transition period this season and will be ineligible for the FCS Playoffs - see GA State. (i.e. bowl eligible in 2014)

IMO, if we join the Sunbelt we'll announce and submit our paperwork prior to the cutoff date. They are down to 8 FBS teams and need the additions asap. While it helps the Sunbelt replenish its numbers, their inability to make a decision prior to the end of 2012 could hurt us in recruiting.

With this in mind, I wonder if we promised to award scholarships to some of the preferred walkons (we seem to have more than usual this year) if we make the transition this upcoming season.

Agreed. He seemed confident though, so I was wondering if he knew something.

If I understand correctly, we would be ineligible for postseason play of any kind for 2 years regardless. I guess it boils down to whether we want to get the process started now or give our kids one last shot at a title and have two full recruiting classes with the FBS tag.

Or, to be precise, it probably depends what a potential conference would want us to do. I don't think we are in a position to dictate the timeframe.

IF we get an invite I believe we will submit the paperwork immediately. The Sun Belt needs to boost their numbers ASAP, and I doubt they care if we get one more year in the playoffs. It might actually be good for Satterfield as it takes a lot of pressure off of him. They won't have to worry about conference standings or playoff bids. Just win baby!

There seems to be an awful lot of chatter all of a sudden... just within the last 24-48 hours. Where's all this smoke coming from? Someone has to know something.

IF we get an invitation, I would be very surprised if we waited to file the papers. I think we would want to make the move ASAP. In addition to the fact that the Sunbelt needs the teams immediately, we have a significant financial incentive. If I'm not mistaken, our paycheck for the 2014 Michigan game goes up significantly if we are FBS. I'm not saying that the money is the only driver, but the inclusion of that provision indicates our administration's mindset.
