Texas State was founded in 1899 and has a similar past to Appalachian being founded in education. Texas State is also a past member of the WAC but was invited to join the Sun Belt as full members beginning in 2013. Their athletics program is spearheaded by Larry Teis.
The football team is currently coached by Dennis Franchione, who brings a lot of experience and has an overall record of 197-115-2 (10-14 at Texas State). Franchione has been a head coach at Southwestern, Pittsburg State, New Mexico, TCU, Alabama, and Texas A&M. This is his second stint at Texas State. They have never been to a bowl in the FBS.
