Troy was founded in 1887 and has expanded to 4 Alabama campuses and 60 teaching sites in 7 U.S. states and 4 countries. Troy has a similar past to Appalachian being founded in education. Troy was previously recognized as Troy State University until April of 2004 when their name was officially changed to Troy University. Their athletics program is spearheaded by John Hartwell.
The football team is currently coached by Larry Blakeney, who is in his 23rd year at Troy where he is 168-99. Troy has 5 conference titles out of 9 years in the Sun Belt and have been to 5 bowls since joining the Sun Belt, winning the New Orleans bowl twice while losing once each in the New Orleans Bowl, GMAC Bowl, and Silicon Valley Bowl. They have several notable players in the NFL including Osi Umenyiora and DeMarcus Ware.
The basketball team is currently coached by first year head coach Phil Cunningham, who took over for longtime coach Don Maestri. Troy has only appeared in the NCAA tournament 1 time, losing in 2003 to Xavier. Troy's only Sun Belt conference regular season title came during the 2009-2010 season.
