THE RUNDOWN

Louisiana Lafayette was founded in 1898 as an industrial school and offered the countries first masters in computer science in 1962.  There have had a couple of different official names, most notably known as the University of Southwestern Louisiana from 1960 to 1999, when they changed their name to the current University of Louisiana Lafayette.  They are the flagship university of the University of Louisiana system, but are not known as the University of Louisiana due to a district court ruling in 1984 that prevented them from assuming that name.  Their athletics department is led by Scott Farmer.

The football team is currently coached by Mark Hudspeth, who is in his third year.  He is 18-8 in the last 2 years.  He was successful as a head coach at North Alabama and has an overall coaching record of 66-21.  The Ragin Cajuns have won the New Orleans Bowl the last 2 years and have 1 Sun Belt Championship (2005) to their name.

The basketball team is currently coached by Bob Marlin who is in 4th year at Louisiana Lafayette and has a record of 43-51 (278-182 overall).  He coached for 12 years at Sam Houston State before coming to Louisiana Lafayette.  The basketball program has appeared in 9 NCAA tournaments going 4-10, but 4 of those appearances representing 3 of their wins have all been vacated due to multiple NCAA violations involving payment to players as well as academic scandals.
