Hasn't this been a problem at most universities for a long time - not just APP? - academia vs athletics - why do you think it is different now? - All the money going to coaches and not to faculty?Stonewall wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 8:00 amThere is a strong anti-athletics sentiment among the faculty.DG is on their list , and she hired him , an SEC guy-then pushed major investments in the program.I talk to a limited number of faculty and staff who report that many can not deal with "our move up" and wish to go back , way back.

Dear APP faculty
If you truly want to teach in the mountains with little emphasis on athletics please transfer to Western Carolina. You will not be bothered with football traffic on weekends.

Re: Everts no confidence is approved
Haven't many of the folks on this board dumped on Everts for not being sufficiently bullish about athletics? Seems like it's been a primary complaint in these parts. Sounds like she's damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.
Also, I can really see many sides of this conversation. Yes, athletics do play an important role in college life and have been a net positive for App over the last ten years. But yes, the primary role of a university is to provide education and training, and athletics (as well as student amenities, recreation, etc.) are nice-to-haves, but not what a college DOES. And yes, these athletics are heavily dependent on student fees. But yes, they also drive awareness of the school in general--there's a marketing and communications purpose for these efforts.
All these things and more are true to some extent. We should be able to have an adult conversation about it all.

Take one look at the situation ECU has found themselves in over the last decade or so and that tells you all you need to know about the UNC BOG getting involved. It’s not something those of us that care about the university should want.NavyApp wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 7:49 amThe faculty have a voice and they are using it, which is perfectly fine by me. The problem that arises is one that has been brought up several times by Mcleansvilleapp; look at the recent track record of the UNC Board of Governor's...not good. So if Everts goes (which could be warranted) does anyone think the replacement will be better? This is not a situation where the grass is greener on the other side.

So 20 years from now when we’re old and posting here about Everts like people post about Laney, Borkowski, Moore, Peacock, and Cobb...what will people say about her? That she was an absentee landlord who had to go or that she got railroaded by a bunch of whiny professors who just wanted raises?

I’m impressed with how Everts has transformed the western side of campus. The P3 idea is not one I initially favored. But the reality is nothing would have gotten accomplished without it. Consider, too, the many improvements Gillin has brought to athletics. Without Everts’ support, those wouldn’t have happened either.

My daughter will graduate from UNCC in December. She is a very intelligent young lady who has had nothing but a great experience at UNCC. She’s at the top of her class in the nursing program and yes I’m a very proud Papa. She spent her freshman year at App and had nothing really good to say about App. You may not know what you had.

This is a complete and total guess, absolutely no inside information at all. I would say the liberal chickens are coming home to roost. At some point in time they do and will eat their own. What we need is a university system staff that in some way shape or form reflects the beliefs and values of the people of N.C. That’s not saying I want less diversity in the staff, that’s saying I want more of the diversity that really counts, diversity of thought.

Re: Everts no confidence is approved
I have no confidence in the UNC BOG to make any type of decision that will benefit App, especially in regards to athletics. Beating their precious baby blue last fall was probably one of the worst things we could have done, honestly, for the long term. That’s probably enough to piss them off to damn us to oblivion.

Recently the UNC BOG has screwed up searches at Western and ECU due to rogue board members. Did you feel y'alls search went as well as possible?

She should be the first Chancellor to have all the students take Hydroxychloroquine as a prophylactic and likely avoid a big outbreak. That would show some kahonas as a strong leader and set her apart from the crowd.

Re: Everts no confidence is approved
When she came to App, I recall some saying that she was brought in to “put us in our place,” after Uncle Ken dared stir the waters in Raleigh and Chapel Hill. I’m guessing she’s failed in that mission in the eyes of some. I’m not sure how much she’s done directly to raise the profile of the University, but I know we have continued to move upward in many areas since she became Chancellor.

Previous Chancellor was fine at the student level. He got a bunch of buildings built and wisely didn’t stop football when he could have. Also wisely hired Mike Hill when he got forced to dump Judy Rose as AD.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 11:16 amMy daughter will graduate from UNCC in December. With all that said he was awful with alumni and the Charlotte business community and was a Chapel Hill apologist, got outmaneuvered politically for a med school in Charlotte and I could go on.
I’m glad your daughter had a great experience though. One of the best things about the UNC system is there is a college for just about everyone, regardless of what you are looking for!

Re: Everts no confidence is approved
I was pleased. I got to participate in a focus group with the search group. They really let our Chair of BoT run the show. There was a BoG representative there the entire time but the search firm and Chair seemed in control. They listened interviewed and presented candidates to our BoT. We interviewed a handful at BoT level and settled on a top 2 who we would want with a preference for one and those two were taken to the BoG who made the final hiring decision. I’m told the BoG hired the person we preferred. No way to be sure with that though.
One of the #1 issues that came up with our focus groups was a name change. We then hired a new Chancellor who had been at the Univ of Toledo. Not Univ or Ohio at Toledo. That seems to indicate they let us do what we wanted.
I haven’t met her yet, but from what I’ve heard this far I think we improved.

Dead on!! Academia raises its clueless head again. Most of these people live in a liberal bubble and have never grown up from or out of high school or college life.
