You know you’re old when...
Much younger alumni mention restaurants that no longer exist which came and went many years AFTER you graduated!

Red Onion opened my senior year, when I was right across the street in Doughton. Anyone remember what that building was before Red Onion?

The Louisiana Purchase in Banner Elk was one of my "impress a date" spots (the other being the Best Cellar in its old location), and it survived long after I graduated, but I think it finally went out of business around a year ago. Great Cajun fare.

LP, great restaurant! On campus loved the Gold Room. Off campus loved the old Woodlands.

It was The Pizza Parlour (I think that was the name) when I was in school and I believe it was a Mellow Mushroom briefly in between.

Boone Drug in the 70’s. Mountain House at the old location. Sollicito’s. That was about all we had. Or do I remember poorly?

Louisiana Purchase built a new location in downtown Banner Elk.
To celebrate the grand opening of their new digs, they cut portion sizes in half and doubled their prices.

The Mountain House was awesome- good food and good prices. I’ll never forget going there one night and Bobby Cremins somehow had the entire College of Charleston team in there for dinner. Had a nice chat with him.appstate77 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 9:26 pmOh yes! The Mountain House! I still miss that placeRekdiver wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 8:58 pmWhile I lament the demise of the B.I. Use to get a pot of coffee and biscuits and gravy for a couple bucks on my way to class.
Today The Gamekeeper and Bistro Roca move the needle.
It was sad to see them move to the Cracker Barrel site and then New Market (Capones).

I remember a sub shop across from the baseball field and right next to a laudromat back in the early 80's that had the best cheeseburgers. Building is still there but I think there may be a vape shop in it now.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
The family from the original Mountain House now has a place in BR called Southern Comforts (as of a couple years ago) where Knight’s On Main (another great place) used to be. They still have the same awesome breakfast they always had (complete with the same ornery lady running it)! Lol... I’ve always loved her! But to the original question, there’s too many to list (then and now).... But Peppers, then and now, is one of them.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 10:00 pmThe Mountain House was awesome- good food and good prices. That was Dino’s in that building I think, during my freshman year. It wasn’t there long after, but they had the best meatball subs! Had ridiculously good priced coupons in the back of student directory!

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
For subs it was no doubt, Yogi's. My first pizza was a Speedy's but once Sollecito's opened it was a no brainer. Since the parents paid for the meal plan the BI and cafeteria burned up a bunch of meal books.
The two for this fossil that were there but no longer was Granny's Donuts (where the bank is now) and on King Street, the Carolina Pharmacy (better known to us regulars as just The Pharmacy). It had a real soda fountain/grill in the back; two hot dogs all the way with a large fry and large cherry smash and you were set. Them was good eats!

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
To this day, Tijuana Fat’s had my favorite bar of all time, based on design/atmosphere. Those of us that had jobs in BR would meet up there often after work. After college, still spent the Saturdays after Thanksgiving there watching football while my wife Christmas shopped. I miss that place... Town Tavern is good, but the atmosphere has been murdered.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
Not because it was good or anything but I’m sure some of us remember Pizza Man delivery. Handy for late night munchies in the dorms and being cheap too. I remember the drivers would catch all grades of heck just because it was a thing. On the same note, I remember the wheel lock person, lady, biatch or whatever getting similar treatment for different reasons at various apartment complexes around Boone. Don’t miss those parking issues but every campus has them.

The LP was my favorite "nice" restaurant for many years while Mark(?) and his wife owned it.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
Early 80s - The Carolina Pharmacy had the best BBQ Sandwiches (always had them put a thing slice of onion on mine) and Fries, ate there for lunch often. And, their doughnuts were homemade. They made them fresh every morning - chocolate, cinnamon, maple, etc., best doughnuts ever!!
