There is plenty of parking for students already. With Greenwood, Hill Street, Stadium, Raley, River Street Parking Deck, and parking around the dorms, we do not need more parking for game day. You may think that students want more parking at 8:55 AM, but I know more that want more green area to hang their hammocks up or just sit in the grass. You can't do that with another slab of asphalt.AppinVA wrote:I'm sure tudents want lush and green until they drive up and down every row in Stadium lot, unable to find a parking space at 8:55 a.m.

Sounds as if they may put a classroom or parking garage there.
Hard to believe they could fill 2,500 more students to live in Boone. Surprised they don't enroll more students then and solve that problem.

Re: Winkler Residence Hall to be Razed?
I don't think the school or town administration WANT the school to get much bigger. ASU has already seen a substantial amount of growth in the past decade, and I think that both parties are okay with the size of it now. I know that the UNC system wants Appalachian State to grow to over 20,000 students, which would be easy to do based off of the amount of applications the school receives yearly, but I don't think the school wants that. There would be a few issues with growing so much so quickly:GoApps70 wrote:Sounds as if they may put a classroom or parking garage there.

- There's not enough space for a freshman class of 5,000 or more, plus returning on-campus students.
- The average GPA of admittance would be lowered, just to get those newer students in.
- Taking in athletics, going from having 17,000 students allowed into all game for free to 20,000 or more, a lottery system might be put into place, much like what is in place at UNC, NCSU, or other large universities.
- The capacity of the campus in general would be pushed to the brim.
- The roads of Boone are already pushed to their limit when gameday rolls around. If the school added 5,000 extra students, you could account for 10,000 extra parents and family members visiting at one point or the other, meaning you'd have quite a few more cars on the roads.
Adding students would be good to get us to that prestigious level that most want us to be at, but we also have to take into account how much restructuring we would need to get there.

I doubt that. App has roughly 6,000 more students than when I was in school, and while there may be more parking spots, I doubt it's anywhere close in proportion to the increase in enrollment. Parking is always a need, and not just/really for six Saturdays each fall. I will agree that the West side of campus could use a little more green space, but additional parking will always should be among the priorities.8993 wrote:There is plenty of parking for students already. Re: Winkler Residence Hall to be Razed?
I am still at student at Appalachian State. I lived in Newland Hall this past year, which is right beside Stadium Lot. I can tell you that, without a doubt, Stadium Lot is not filled on a daily basis. I typically saw three to four rows filled with the far end of the lot(closest to KBS) being mostly empty. Raley Lot is typically filled towards the front, with the end closest to the SRC being less crowded. Rivers Street Parking Deck is usually filled up to the third row, with the upper rows unfilled. Hill Street is usually full, mainly because most students park their cars there and leave them til the weekend. State Farm is filled for the most park with their being half filled rows towards the back. Again, I know that we could always use more parking, but when it comes to parking for students and faculty, we don't need anymore.AppinVA wrote:I doubt that. I know that we could use more parking for tailgating to get a few more bucks, but if we build more parking lots, it should only be built if students need it during the week, not for the tailgaters which hang around Boone for six days out of the year. I'm not trying to knock anybody here, as I know that the alumni and tailgaters in Stadium pay for a substantial amount of things at ASU, but we just need to made do with what we have right now. For all we know, ASU may have already peaked when it comes to growth. I doubt that, but nobody really knows.

Are those empty spaces in the morning or afternoon? I'm sure things do thin out after 1 p.m. classes. It was the case back in the day, but at 10 a.m., things were very packed. I would have killed for a last row space on a few occasions back then.

I'm talking morning classes. I typically had classes from 9 AM to 12 PM. I have not seen Stadium Lot packed on any regular weekday. I have seen it packed on Saturdays when there is a band competition or football camp, but I have not seen it packed on a regular Wednesday or Monday. I think many think that there is no parking to be found at Appalachian because they can't find it on football game days, but come up in the middle of March and see how much parking can be found in Stadium.AppinVA wrote:Are those empty spaces in the morning or afternoon? The reason so many spots are available now is this: the Appalcart. Although there are more students here now, there are also more apartment complex that are built along the Appalcart routes. So, there may be more students, but there are less cars on the road and more students on the buses.AppinVA wrote:Wow. Who woulda thunk it?8993 wrote:I'm talking morning classes. Both of my aprartments were along the Appalcart route, but my schedule never synched up with their schedule. It looks like thier routes have been made more efficient over the years.8993 wrote:AppinVA wrote:Wow. Who woulda thunk it?8993 wrote:I'm talking morning classes. That's what will be needed to be expanded when we add onto the stadium. Want to go to Appalachian games without season tickets/yosef parking? Catch the Appalacart. Cramming folks into small college towns for Saturday games that can't handle the traffic is not unique to Boone (it's actually a college town tradition), and we'll come up with a solution that's good (or as good as can be) for everyone.

Re: Winkler Residence Hall to be Razed?
We were shown the enrollment projections at the last Alumni Council meeting. ASU is not projected to hit 20,000 enrollment until about 2018. The growth slows down a lot over the next few years. There is a desire for ASU to serve more students, but the expectations are not that we will do it by adding students on campus.8993 wrote: I know that the UNC system wants Appalachian State to grow to over 20,000 students.

I think there should be a big focus on adding to the Hickory campus. Setting up stronger roots in the heart of the Piedmont could certainly give us an upper hand on down the road.

Re: Winkler Residence Hall to be Razed?
I took a look at US population tables from 2011 and it doesn't indicate that we're going to see a national rise in the number of college aged students anytime soon. North Carolina may continue to grow faster than the national average, but I doubt we're going to see significantly higher rates of students going to 4 year colleges. I would guess that the big growth spurt for colleges is pretty much over.
