I miss Klondike. I met my wife there.

Re: Another haunt bites the dust
I grew up in Boone. Many of you predate my time there but I was there before New Market Center was built (the Old Homestead was there) and when the baseball field was in the middle of town near Hardees. I like most of the changes. The new good places far outnumber the places lost in my subjective taste...most of the places mentioned that shut down I never cared for.....for every Woodlands that I'll miss there's been a Murphy's that is a good riddance..... Mellow, Vidalia, Ransom, Lost province, Booneshine, AMB, Bagelry, Horton Hotel, Melanie's, Local, Proper, Peppers, Black Cat, Peddler, Casa Rustica, Los/Dos, Basil!!...all of these are existing gems or upgrades from what was there before.

Most restaurants, everywhere, have a shelf life. It is not surprising that most will come and go. I see it where I live and certainly Boone is no exception. Some are just as well as they were not special anyway, others you really hate seeing go. Just down the road toward Spruce Pine was Beam's where I had my wedding rehearsal dinner. Great family owned Chinese food, some of best I have ever had, ever. Years ago driving back by saw they were closed and it broke my heart. I assumed as the parents who started it got old there was no one else to continue to run place. I figured Sollecito's fit into that same situation. BTW, he was so cool singing his songs. I loved that place and hated to hear when it went away.

Went to Beams a couple of times back in the 70’s. Great Chinese food there back then.

Beam’s was my Grandfather’s restaurant. I rolled many a wonton and egg roll in my youth!

Speedys Pizza, Yogi’s, Big E, Antlers, Library Club. Gone. Remember when McDonalds came to town? Highway Robbery is still there.wncapp78 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 9:50 pmLOL. People posting about all the “old” hole in the wall joints. In the “old days” when many of us were in school, there was no alcohol in Boone. There were no old joints. Each generation of Mountaineers will have their version of what makes Boone a special place. And it will continue to be a special place.

I went in the old Antlers not too long ago. Boca Raton now, a restaurant, redesigned.

Bistro Roca. But about as far from the old Antlers as Boca Raton is from Blowing Rock. You won't get a PBR draft in that establishment now!Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 6:42 pmI went in the old Antlers not too long ago. Boca Raton now, a restaurant, redesigned.

Yeah, great restaurant, nothing like Antlers but you can still catch a wiff of the beer soaked floors from time to time; they'll never get that smell out of there. I know exactly were my crew and I used to sit and I can see those nickel draft cups stacked on our table half-way to the ceiling, like it was yesterdaymike87 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 10:54 amBistro Roca. Beam's! To this day that is the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. For whatever reason I was thinking about Beam's last week.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Fri Feb 04, 2022 11:24 amMost restaurants, everywhere, have a shelf life. It is not surprising that most will come and go. Beam's Restaurant was certainly a huge part of my childhood growing up in Avery County. I agree it was the best, very unique, and there won't be another place like it for sure. Everything was homemade from scratch and fresh, and my grandfather hand-cut the steaks every day.
During the summer and fall, most of the vegetables that were served came from the big garden that you passed by on the way in. Unfortunately my uncle-in-law, Richard, who was the Chinese chef passed away a couple of years ago. The restaurant operated for a total of 73 years from inception (the Chinese menu was added around 1970). I could probably write a pretty good book about the restaurant and it's history.
