Boone Golf Club

Unread post by boonetown1 » Wed Oct 15, 2025 3:31 pm

Is owned by several families. Half are looking to sell; with plans to destroy the course and develop a 9 hole resort. This is the only public course in town and would hurt the community. Anyone interested should send notes to Boone town council to block rezoning efforts.

Don't live in Boone but it would be a shame if this happened.
Mountain Aire in West Jefferson is a super nice public layout that is also reasonably priced and close to Boone.

App needs to buy it.
Let the business program run it. Maybe team up with NC State for business ag program and maintain it-summer interns etc…. Could be cool to get a turf management program at App and this could be their baby.

It would be beneficial for App to control it for future development or so no private developer buys it. Control the land you control the decisions.

App buying it would be good. The Town of Boone buying it would also be good. Several older country clubs (like Monroe Country Club) have survived and flourished when rolled into a municipality's Parks and Rec Department. Could be a joint venture...

If I recall, there was an investigation into buying it several years ago and doing pretty much exactly what you described, but it was shot down (potentially by Peacock). I think the idea is a great one

Curious as to whether it is profitable or not.
The nine hole resort idea doesn't sound like a great idea.

It the last reasonably flat large tract of land left in the town limits.

9-hole resort is a bad idea.

That's too bad. Play it from time to time about when we travel up during the year.

As strange as it sounds, I can't imagine the town rezoning that property, and allowing it to be developed. Losing that public golf course would be a devastating blow to the area.

It's the only public course in the entire county. I like willow valley but that doesn't count.

Here in Hickory we lost Hampton Heights to D R Horton. Unquestionably it is the highest and best use of the property they purchased.

I doubt there will even be 9 holes left at the BGC for long. That's just short-term window dressing.

is it not in a flood plain? every time there's a good rain, the road that runs alongside it floods.

That course is too good to be turned into crappy housing. I have a lot of good memories on that track!

I love to play it though that’s only once or twice a year. I don’t like to see courses sold to developers but I understand the business. How much they want for Boone Golf Course? $6-$7 million?

I do too, but time marches on. In then the end, life is about learning to deal with losses without losing hope.

Closing it would suck.
I had to work through school to pay for it so I took partial loads in Spring and Fall. Went "full time" in summers. I spent many a late afternoon at that place. I used to play 2-3 times a week at Boone or Seven Devils. Both places were affordable and interesting. Seven Devils has been gone a long time. Boone was one of the most fun places I have been and always in good condition. Their greens would rival any.

Most major universities have their own golf courses. I would love for the university to buy it. It would be good for our golf teams and think of the good it could do in the community. People need a relatively cheap and accessible place to play without having to spend a ton on property. If they want to build another golf resort, send their ass out to Bamboo. And yes, holes 2,3 and 4 used to flood a lot.

And people will not come to a 9 hole resort. That's a BS smokescreen.

You get one chance to save a golf course. They disappear and are never replaced. I hope the county/city make the right choice.

Just get the all the Floridians who play there each summer to start squawking and complaining…that could help.
