Let’s hope enrollment grows in HKY. It would be a shame to start calling it “Everts’ Folly”

The effort to establish a Hickory Campus goes back to Chancellor Borkowski and a handful of Catawba County folks. Credit to Everts , she found a way. There was some good fortune involved along the way certainly but she got it done and by all accounts it is making a difference in the lives of those that take advantage of the opportunity.

Re: Hky campus article. Looking to boost numbers
They should do a basketball ball game every year in Hickory.
.
They let me walk around freely in the open part of the building, and I took a lot of pictures when I dropped by there a few weeks ago. When I was there is was pretty much empty of students and staff, though it was a Friday around lunch time.
I did look in a science lab, and it may have been labeled Chemistry lab. I did not see any gas outlets nor any lab benches with fume hoods but it is possible the room was not finished.
I am not sure how many classrooms are up and running. The cafe area which would have been in use when it was an office building was not ready for use but I am not sure it needed to be gutted to make it usable either. I did like all the social areas, which will be nice to have since dorms are not an option. I did notice a few clubs announced, though I can't remember the clubs purpose.
Props on showing the football game. That should be a regular feature, and maybe attract some alumni in the area.
Do these students pay the athletic fees that does allow admission into athletic events? I was going to ask a few questions in the admissions office but I needed to get to Boone myself to make the field hockey game that was the purpose of the trip.

For those of us who were at App in the early 90’s, bringing Borkowski up doesn’t make us feel any better about the vision or wisdom behind adding a Hickory campus.Stonewall wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 1:12 pmThe effort to establish a Hickory Campus goes back to Chancellor Borkowski and a handful of Catawba County folks. I think like most things/people that end on a sour note, you often only remember the negative (look no further than football coaches as another example). Everts legacy will be tied to the Hickory campus and that is a decent legacy to leave. In a time where secondary education is declining, we were able to expand to an underserved area. That should be viewed in a positive manner and supported for future growth.

If ASU basketball played a game in Hickory, what would be the site?

I expect the growth will meet or exceed their expectations in the coming years.

We played UNC-A at CVCC two years ago. I think one early season game with a men's and women's double header or just play both schools there once a year in the early season would be good enough.Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 7:33 pmIf ASU basketball played a game in Hickory, what would be the site?
Baseball has used Crawdads stadium in years past. CVCC baseball uses American Legion Field, and I am not sure if that field would be in good enough condition. One midweek game could work. I am not sure about softball, unless CVCC is willing, but they are for basketball.
I don't see why each teams sport that could find a suitable facility could not play at least one early season non-conference game in Hickory, maybe against a Charlotte team, Queens is D1 now.
Volleyball is not sponsored at CVCC and I can't remember if the basketball floor is marked for volleyball also. Maybe a pre-season warm up for volleyball.
CVCC also sponsors bass fishing, which, (checks notes), App State does not sponsor.
L-R would be a better place for a larger crowd, and nicer facilities, but I don't see App giving L-R enough money to make that happen as if I were L-R I would ask for a ton of money as what App is doing in Hickory is not going to help L-R long term most likely.

When we did not play last year I asked the question and the reply was the expectation was a basketball game every other year in Hickory.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 10:36 pmI believe we play in hickory this year as wellAppDub wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 8:47 pmUm, maybe the same location as the last time they played a game in Hickory...and got smoked.Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 7:33 pmIf ASU basketball played a game in Hickory, what would be the site?

All kidding aside…a ton of time, energy and taxpayer dollars went into repurposing that property. So, I do hope things work out with the Hickory campus.
