BOT meets Thurs-Fri at Plemmons SU

Big agenda of report items and several action items of note. Most significant action item is the approval of the University's Five-Year Strategic Plan. There are a few action items for athletics concerning audits and concerning coaching personnel. There will be at least two closed sessions over the two days--concerning Campaign for Appalachian matters, real estate matters and HR matters...(1) Promotion and Tenure Considerations; (2) Employment Agreement – Men’s Soccer Head Coach; and (3) Faculty Emeriti Status.

Charlie Cobb is on the agenda at least twice. I'd imagine the meeting won't end w/o Cobb giving the Trustees a basketball coaching search report; and perhaps giving them a name (or names) and contract requirements. [You may read that as salary, incentives and perks required to get a signature from the leading candidate(s).] It's not specifically on the agenda, but there are several agenda items labeled "informational."

How much time passes between retirement and emeritus status? Dr. Mamola in Physics and Astronomy retired last summer. I don't know anyone that is more deserving than he is of recent retirements. I may have missed something, but I don't think he has been granted this status yet.

I think I noticed his wife was given this status a few years ago based on a wall display in the new Reich COE building that I took time to look over when I was at the RCOE open house a few weeks ago.

He may be included in this year's "class." You should know by the weekend. Here are the most recent ones I can dig out plus the current policy manual. You caught my interest on this, since most (if not all) of my professors are already in retirement and sadly, a few are deceased. Anyway, you'll see some folks here that you know (BTW, I'm not taking time to put them in chronological order). Have fun reminiscing. I did.

Mamola left the classroom a decade ago more or less to take over the editorship of The Physics Teacher, which is very prestigious for App to have that journal housed at App. So officially he was still tied to App as an employee but had he not done the editing of TPT I am guessing he may have retired a few years earlier than last summer.
