Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
Got it.
The only thing that occurs to me is that there always seems to be some portion of the Stadium lot crowd that arrives shortly before kickoff and no apparent desire to tailgate. Is it possible to subdivide parking privileges to give those who want to tailgate the spaces in Stadium and move those who want the quickest possible in-and-out to the deck?
I'm sure that would be complicated. Just spitballing.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
You have to wonder how much of this is achievable. I was reading through the current master plan the other day and lots of stuff there still has not even been started.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
I think that is a real possibility. Why IMO, putting the deck where the current tennis courts are makes most sense. Those folks can enter from 105, shortcut over to Bodenheimer at the hairpin and never see the traffic of Rivers street. Those who sit in suites and club seats can enter from back of AAC. Seems simple enough.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
Turning Stadium lot into a more tree covered green space would not kill tailgating. If anything it would make tailgating there even more enjoyable.

My argument is about the parking deck. But since you mentioned it, how do trees help?Appftw wrote:Turning Stadium lot into a more tree covered green space would not kill tailgating. If anything it would make tailgating there even more enjoyable.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
I think BigC is more than likely right on about his points on the effects the new plans would have on tailgating with parking decks and all. Not sure exactly how the trees help in Appftw's post but it would be cool if the new tailgating area was Grove-esque (Ole Miss) although I'm not positive if that would even be the case with the new "green space".

This is why we need a little patch of woods.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
I think we're all talking about different versions of the plans. And for the record, I think a giant parking deck over stadium lot is a terrible idea. However, on the plan I'm referring to, this is being done specifically with tailgating in mind (it says "renovated surface parking for tailgating"). We might lose a few spaces for the occasional tree as shown, but it will go a long way into making the ugliest part of campus (stadium lot) much much more aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly (permeability is a big deal for water runoff and groundwater).
Would you rather hang out in a sea of asphalt or a tree-lined green space? Trees and grass generally make places better. Just take your tailgate spot for example, C. I think it adds a lot of charm being tucked into the grass and trees there. If you were in the middle of a YOOGE nondescript parking lot it just wouldn't be the same IMO.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
I do like the idea of having some green space between the rows of cars in stadium lot as the current setup leaves little room for cars to get by when there are tents/tables all over the place. That is why we left stadium years ago. The reduced number of spots would put a premium on these new spots, but there are usually a decent number of empty spots in Stadium lot so this might not be as big of an issue as we think.
Hopefully a combination of parking decks on the edges of campus and then some surface lots will be used. We certainly need more places to park, and i'm sure the Yosef Club would love to have more spaces to offer. The only way to do that build some decks.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
It is not noted in the attachments in this thread but I thought I remembered reading in the overall Master Plan that there was mention that the track around the football needed to be removed. Could not agree more here.
I do not like obstructing any view of the football stadium as a part of the walk/drive up stadium drive. Not in favor of building any parking deck where duck pond field resides now. I'm ok with additional parking decks but not near the stadium lot or duck pond field whatsoever.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
You are certainly welcome to park on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a parking deck and carry your tailgate tent, grill, chairs and cooler to the trees and green space. Then, before the game, pack it all up and carry it back up to where you are parked on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Do that all you want. My guess is, after 1 game, it won't happen again.Appftw wrote:Turning Stadium lot into a more tree covered green space would not kill tailgating. I know I won't be doing that. I'll beg/adjust my giving to ensure I get an open air greenwood parking spot before going into a deck.

Being turned into a park with grass and trees. Where do you think folks will park? A deck.
It will kill the atmosphere.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
You should actually read the plan I was referring to. It says "renovated surface parking FOR TAILGATING" and shows green space. This can be a permeable surface or grass. Not sure, but clearly it's PARKING FOR TAILGATING.AppDawg wrote:Yet you like the idea of stadiumAppftw wrote:I don't want a parking deck on Stadium lot...AppDawg wrote:You are certainly welcome to park on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a parking deck and carry your tailgate tent, grill, chairs and cooler to the trees and green space. Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
Gotcha. I had in my mind the larger picture. With the proposed plans, you lose approx 50% of open air parking in stadium and 100% in Raley. It may create a nice space for some folks, but eliminates it for most.Appftw wrote:You should actually read the plan I was referring to. Currently YOSEF minimum donations are significantly tied to parking, not seating. Parking and the associated is the hot commodity. Will folks give $1,000+ to park in a deck in raley or In the Stadium area? We'll see. I am afraid there may be unintended consequences if some of these plans come to fruition.

Re: Appalachian Master Plan 2025
In my opinion, one of the reasons we struggle to put fans in seats at our basketball games is the limited amount of surface parking around the Holmes Center. Basketball fans' best options are the parking decks along Rivers Street. And as stated previously, parking decks make terrible places for tailgating regardless of the season. If the 2025 Master Plan significantly limits the amount of surface parking in Boone, then our administration better be prepared for attendance at our football games to more closely resemble that of our basketball games.

Attendance was bad when we were good as well. It would help if athletics could get the word out about when and who we are playing.ukappfan wrote:And not to be a naysayer, but our basketball team is also terrible and painful to watch... for now.AppGrad78 wrote:In my opinion, one of the reasons we struggle to put fans in seats at our basketball games is the limited amount of surface parking around the Holmes Center.
