Again, the comparison refered only to the frequency in which the song is drunkenly mumbled at karaoke or played on bar Juke boxes across the state.Kgfish wrote:The only thing "over the top" is comparing Wagon Wheel to one of the iconic rock songs of all time.ASUMountaineer wrote:That's over-the-top. If true I feel for "this generation".
I love Skynard and I love OCMS, but I wouldn't make such an apples and oranges comparison on musicality or brand scale alone.

First, um...wow.JCline0429 wrote:ASUMountaineer wrote:I'm not sure it's that simple. Yes, "popular" music today is horrible, but there is good music to be found today, you just have to know where to look. Most of it doesn't reach the airwaves, whereas previous generations saw a lot of their best music hit the airwaves. And, let's not act like previous generations didn't have their own crappy music--ABBA, Bee Gees, Flock of Seagulls, seriously?Maddog1956 wrote:Everyone I know from this generation that have ever heard anything from past generations, have even wondered where their "classic" music is. Not saying they don't enjoy what they listen to, it just different. Maybe that's just the future, throw away music.
Also, let's not go for the easiest measure. Legends like Skynyrd, Queen, and The Beetles are tough to beat for any generation.
Call me out of touch or square, but you had to be part of the generation to appreciate ABBA and the BeeGees. ABBA was loved in every country in the world. I'd love to have 1/10 of a cent for every album they sold and continue to sell. Hell, millions bought the albums if nothing but the album covers and saw ABBA live and lusted after Agnetha and Anna-Frid. I'll almost go as far as saying that you really have never had sex until you've been with a genuine Scandanavian blonde. They were classic. They were the ultimate international pop stars. What real man doesn't like scandanavian blondes?
You can't discount what hundreds of millions of fans of any generation loved and paid good money for.
Second, I would think any "real man" would like Scandinavian blondes.
Third, I'm not discounting it, just saying it's bad just as others are saying my generation's music is bad. It's a silly comparison for someone to "feel" for an entire generation, especially when that person contributed to raising said generation. That was mostly my point to begin with.
Lastly, I was not party of the Disco generation...praise Jesus!

I grew up in the 70's and ABBA and the Bee Gees are part of the soundtrack of my generation. Flock of Seagulls was my college days and I will also admit I kind of liked the song " I ran". Sucker for nostalgia.
"Wagon Wheel" is a great song too, imo.

Great article on their early days (and time around Boone) if you're interested.

Thanks for posting that. It was well worth the read. It was a treat to see them play around town back then. I'll never forget them sluggin' beers and breakin' strings in Cottonwood. Needless to say, I was not surprised when they got "discovered".skjellyfetti wrote:Great article on their early days (and time around Boone) if you're interested.
