I was at App when Hugo hit, there was bad flooding but King Street wasn't flooded. By that metric alone I would say this is much worse.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 12:55 pmFor those around old enough to remember, is this worse than when Hugo hit?
We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

Re: King Street Flooded
That was the year before me, so all I heard were stories. Hugo was supposed to hit the DC area but took a sharp turn away. We ended up with a day off of school in sunshine.t4pizza wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 1:01 pmI was at App when Hugo hit, there was bad flooding but King Street wasn't flooded. Was in Boone for Hugo, Frances, Ivan, and other’s that I can’t remember. Never saw King St turned into a river before. Was working at Hound Ears during Frances and Ivan and we were closed for weeks cleaning up and removing boulders washed up from the Watauga. Seeing the videos I’ve seen today, this will be worse. So sad for those in low lying areas that will lose everything.t4pizza wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 1:01 pmI was at App when Hugo hit, there was bad flooding but King Street wasn't flooded. Too soon to tell, Hugo had much higher winds, but it came through so fast that the flooding was minimal. I think the road and building damage with this much water is going to be much worse and take longer to repair.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 12:55 pmFor those around old enough to remember, is this worse than when Hugo hit?

Re: King Street Flooded
Hugo was bad for us in northern Iredell. Tornadoes were the main issue and we didn't have power for a week at my house. Only a half of a tree in our yard went down and missed everything. Granted I was just turning 12 so did hurt my life too much. Just days out of school and family live in grandmother's house who only lost power for like a couple hours even though she was only 5 miles away.

I'm not too far from you. We usually get the brunt of these hurricanes. Hope everyone is ok that took the blow.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:37 amMy son said power lines down and trees as well. I can’t believe that it’s even possible to plan a game. Doppler shows it gone by early afternoon but it’s going to be a huge mess. I’m in Fayetteville and it’s absolutely pouring here.

Re: King Street Flooded
I'm plenty old enough to remember Hugo but I don't remember King Street ever being flooded like this. Hugo was worse in terms of wind, but this flooding is unreal. My father had a beautiful sailboat on Lake Norman that was totaled (sunk) in Hugo. Unrelated note: my daughter was born 9 months after, so there's an up side at least (for my family).

Should be interesting to get all of that traffic cleared that is stuck there as well. Backing up all those transfer trucks...

Chimney Rock apparently is wiped out clean. So so sad. It’s going to take years to build WNC back up. It makes me sick to think about our slice of heaven hurting this much.

Re: King Street Flooded
I would think so. I was in Bowie during Hugo. I remember the piles of dirt at the Mall but not anywhere flooding like this, though I also had enough sense to not be out and getting in the way to what would have been the worst parts of Boone. I remember Rankin being flooded, or at least the aftermath.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 12:55 pmFor those around old enough to remember, is this worse than when Hugo hit?
This is up there with 1940 and losing the railroad into Boone, and 1916. Those may have had worse landslides due to mountains being much more bare of trees due to logging. That was a huge problem with the landslides in 1916 I have read. (I was not at App in 1916 for the record.)
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

I was in school for Hugo and I don't think it compares. Helene seems much worse to me.

Anyone have any idea about who/when our furthest back living graduate might be? Your comment made me curious.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 8:34 pmI would think so. Re: King Street Flooded
I was in grad school 1977-78 and also a member of the rescue squad. We had torrential rains for about 4 days the spring of 1978. We got called out very early Sunday morning to go help evacuate the nursing car center that was located near the New River.....the very place that the university geology department advised the town to NOT build there due to the river flood plane. Needless to say our Sunday starting at around 5:00 am didn't end until around 5:00 pm. We even had to get Raleigh to activate the National Guard so that the big trucks could get to the folks when our ambos could no longer get through.
The river had all kinds of debris floating down it. Once we heard a hissing sound and saw a huge Suburban propane tank floating by. I'm just glad it didn't strike a downed tree and puncture.
The issues during the past 24 hours are way worse than Hugo when it hit the middle of SC and went through Charlotte. We had downed trees but no houses floating away or businesses (and towns) wiped out.

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Dmas have broken, chimney rock downtown is done. I40 to TN is gone. Asheville is cut off and can only be accessed by air. Some will never recover from this....

Re: King Street Flooded
It’s only natural to try to compare devastating storms. It all depends on where you live and how you are impacted. Hugo was bad but this might be worse. The pictures are absolutely heartbreaking. It’s one thing to cut trees down and repair structures but its completely different to have communities under water and there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do until the water subsides.
